I don't think anyone knows at this time, other than "something needs to be done". I don't see how the shed can be life expired, but I can see that it isn't big enough! Problem is that getting onto the Bellwood part of the site requires some sharp curves, and a traverser was acquired to serve the originally proposed shed, but it has a maximum load of about 40 tons (I think it was originally at New Cross Gate carriage sheds). Even without using it, it might be possible to build a diesel shed there though. Another part of the solution to easing the problem might be to make New Bridge stabling point into a shed and stable 2-3 engines down there over the winter.

The track layout of the MPD can't help, as because it is a series of siding fans with a headshunt which is also used as a stabling and storage siding presumably two shunters are needed at any one time.

When the NYMR first started up it was proposed as a 6 mile railway from Grosmont to Ellerbeck and Grosmont was the logical place for a headquarters. Once it became an 18 mile railway, Pickering became the prime starting point for visitors and this remains the case today. Thus, a majority of trains need to start and finish their day at Pickering and, having the principal MPD at Grosmont is a significant inconvenience. IMHO, any significant development needs to be at or near Pickering and I cannot see the logic of any significant expansion at Grosmont. Facilities might need improving but that is all.
The shed generally manages quite nicely with one. The headshunt is generally used either for long term storage or stabling of operational diesels.

Myself and the good lady are staying in Cropton from Monday 25th. Just wondered what was working there this week? Also any recomendations for food and drink anywhere would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you like diesels it will be great! The railway is in the 'poo' currently which much of its planned steam fleet OOU. The loss of 45407 and 44871 and later 62005 to Scotland has left them with 76079 and 75029 plus 61994 came out last week. I shot up there on 20th as 61994 was meant to be on the long Whitby duty but it failed its FTR and it was 75029, although they got 61994 going for the short Whitby. At that time (red TT) the only steam into Pickering was the long Whitby duty (starts 0915 Grosmont through to 1825 back there), all else to Pickering was diesel.

I also went for 60007 on diner to Battersby on 9th, except that was 75029 too as 60007 wasn't feeling well and there seem to be 'issues' around the A4 currently. Then the next day 62005 failed on 1635 ex Grosmont and train terminated Goathland.

With mass use of the 25, 37 and Daisy haven't visited much and when I do the specific loco I go for falls to bits - so what's it worth for me NOT to visit next week! Seriously - I will try to get 61994 which has eluded me most of the time it has been at Grosmont. This coming week it should be the Pickering loco and probably on 1100, possibly 0925 (but one of pair will be diesel) and being Gold TT both 75029 and 76079 should be out, but they need 100% reliability to deliver ....!

Thanks mate I dont mind diesels at all so it might not be a bad time at all to visit I certainly wouldnt mind the 25 to whitby! Fingers crossed for you bagging 61994 had rather a few miles behind that in its previous incarnation as 3442!

Whisper it..... but much as I love steamers, 7628 Sybilla is one of my favourite NYMR locos> class 25s were very common round my neck of the woods in the late 60s / early 70s and I often saw them on the old ICI Bogie Hoppers, I still love that engine sound, especially winding up Newton Dale early in the morning mmmm

Plus she was built by Beyer Peacock in Gorton. I was outshopped in Gorton too, just over a year before 7628.

Subject to any "on the day" problems, 61994, 75029 and 76079 are in service for the coming week. 60007 may join them when a wheel crack has been attended to, but this needs a specialist and suitably authorised welder and they won't be able to do the work until after the Bank Holiday i my understanding. D7628 will probably be doing the "short" Whitby and 37 264 is also in use.

I have never been there myself, but the village pub in Cropton is also home a brewery (the NYMR stocks its bottled beers), and is I understand very good. If you are looking for something a bit special, then the Fox and Rabbit at Sinnington is very good and also has real ales. At perhaps the other end of the scale, Capplemans Fish and Chip restaurant in Pickering High Street is excellent but always very busy, while Potter Hill fisheries are an excellent take away fish and chips.

Most pubs in Pickering do real ale and quite a few food. The White Swan on the High Street is good for both beer and food. A bit further afield, the Horseshoe Inn at Levisham has an excellent reputation (it is 12 years since I have actually sampled it!)

Finally, for lunches, I can recommend Mulberries next to the buffer stops at Pickering Station, which also can serve bottled beers with meals and is operated by the NYMR.

I'll echo Steven's recommendations for Potter Hill chippy and for the Horseshoe at Levisham. The latter is my usual eaterie when in the area and entertaining friends but you may well have to book.

In Whitby if you want a bit more pricey then Trenchers opposite the station at or a lot cheaper the Royal over the Pelican crossing down the alley and turn left.
