    If you want to burn diesel there are some perfectly historical engines still in use today, such as EE Type 3s & Brush Type 4s. I recall after WW1 it was 'not popular with the crews' although I can't remember where I read that. Many companies had a go, if it was successful they'd have kept some for strikes/shortages etc and didn't, although Holden(I think) perfected a burner that just fitted into the firebox. Think eurocrat with sensor device for emissions, and the loss of the defining smell of British steam, and the cost of oil in every manufactured crisis

    Fascinating thread. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever considered running a steam locomotive on LPG.

    Many theme parks do, only in this context lpg is referred to as propane. It's the same stuff.
