Could be anything really, the usual rubbish journalism gives you the impression there's a 9F and Maunsell stock down there judging by the text and pictures

I suspect a few industrial odd and ends is most likely, the name doesn't ring a bell as any significant works or such like.

You wouldnt really associate 9F's with Kent would you? As David's said its just going to be a few odds and ends.

There was a strategic reserve, I saw it. It was at Barry, South Wales, where over 200 steam locos were stored in the open. True, after 20 years or so, they were a bit rusty and bits had fallen off but, they have all gone now, disguised as Class 66, so as not to arouse suspicion. Case proven I think.

'Stop trying to put me in that strait jacket' Help!

did any 9F's ever work in Kent? after all the Kent electrification happened in the 1950's, not sure of the exact date, but 1955 seems to come to mind, so by the time the 9F's would have been in traffic they should have been superseded by ED's or 33's

1961/62 was when the electrification scheme was completed, but I don't know of any 9Fs finding their way to Kent. Hopefully someone on here knows for sure.

I think that the only 9Fs ever allocated to the SR were based at Eastleigh for use on oil trains from Fawley and they didn't stay long. All sorts of locos worked their way onto the SR on freights via the West London lines. I've never seen a picture of a 9F on one of these workings, however, and if one did make it onto the South London line, it would most likely have come off at Hither Green. It's very hard to imagine one working onto an obscure industrial site somewhere near West Malling on the Maidstone East line.

thats what i thought, i knew that some 9F's were sheded at Eastleigh and that occationally some got to bournmouth of the S&D but i never heard of any on the South east section, as most engine changeovers were at hither green, and no 9F's were ever shedded there

Come on chaps. Unless I'm much mistaken the header photo in the article was a Canadian locomotive, and we can be rather confident they didn't run one of those either. I think we can safely assume that the writer just grabbed a couple of photos from the photo library utterly in ignorance of what might or might not have run on the line or even of the difference between a 9F and a light industrial. Poor sod is probably about 20, knows nothing about steam engines and has never seen one and had about 20 minutes to do the piece.

Er, don't think it's Canadian, it's got buffers and a screw coupling! Otherwise, you're absolutely right.

Surprised that no one has mentioned the strategic reserve off the Harrogate York line and A59 at Hessay. Rumoured for years to be a store when it was Out of Bounds as MOD property. In private hands now and nothing there.

I do think the Strategic Reserve is a load of crap. But the Romantic in me would love to think that theres a roundhouse underground somwhere with somthing ready to go a bit like the Legend of King Arthur crossed with Thunderbirds. Daydream over, back to the real world!

But there is a strategic reserve, its called the preservation movement , and any way, i would assume that any such thing would only be needed in national emergency situations, in which case things would be so messed up that nothing could move anyway and if it was in an aftermath of some nuclear attack, there would be very very few left who would be in any way capable of doing anything but looking after themselves .

@martin1656 I agree with you that in some dire emergency we have 200 odd Steam loco's we could use from our heritage railway fleet. Im not saying that there is a fleet squirreld away. But the romantic in me likes to think just maybe! As I've said I dont believe there is. But perhaps one day a Fat Clergyman on an exploration trip may just accidendtly stumble across somthing....:)

And spirited away in the middle of the night , by men dressed in black, wearing balaclava's never to be seen, or heard of again, so we would never know
