IWR 10 is from the 1860s batch and has a flattish roof; IWR 38 is from the 1880s batch and has a higher arc roof.

So 1 is IWR 10 and 2 is IWR 38.

For corroboration see the VCT survey

    Thanks Nick and Gary.

Yes - my fault. Perhaps a passing Mod might care to move posts 123 to 132 inclusive to here?

The June edition of C&W news is now published on the IWSR web site.

Headline news this month is the completion of the full restoration of SECR Dropside 62888, yet another wagon for our heritage goods train! The heritage goods train runs on the second Sunday of every month, we always aim to have it hauled by an Island engine, usually a Terrier. The next run out will be on 12th July.

Also good news about the Ryde Pier Tram Appeal, it has nearly reached its target - donations still welcome!

What is it that you wish to know? We have not had much chance to even look at it, we do know that it is minus a brake valve. Very busy part of the season for us so may have to wait until the Autumn before we try it out.

Currently we are rebuilding an old air brake test cart as our fleet of engineers vehicles, in particular the ballast hoppers, are gradually going over to Air Brakes and we need a means of testing prior to going into traffic.
Also our Tamper, Crane and Regulator are Air Braked.

We currently do a static test using an airline and a couple of valves, we can produce various applications and ensure the release is correct. We still use the old mechanical triple valves that will not release proportionally, it is full release or nothing! The test bench will allow us to fault find defective valves.

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway has been awarded a grant of £16,000 by the Prism Fund to restore two more LBSC coal wagons. As far as we know, once this project is completed we will be the only heritage railway in the country to be able to exhibit & operate an authentic pre-war coal train in its original setting. Work is likely to start very soon and doubtless Gary will keep us updated with progress on his Flickr page. We do, however, need to raise £5,000 in matching funding over the next twelve months so any contributions would be welcome.

i think 'authentic' pre war coal train is a bit of an overstatement! on the Isle of Wight, coal trains from Medina Wharf were limited to 25 wagons till the E1s arrived (afterwards 40). i dont think the IOWSR can muster 25 coal wagons!

however as a devotee of the LBSCR i am very pleased to hear of extra funding for restoration of more of the ex LBSCR wagons at Havenstreet! the current fleet is quite superb and a credit to all involved.

    cheers,
    julian

You caught me on the hop with your quick response! If you would like to make your donation through the 'general' option on the website I will make sure it goes to the wagon project.

    Many Thanks!

Had a ride on Sunday and one passenger who got on a train at Smallbrook said the IOWSR coach was in better condition than the Island Line train!
