This site http://www.railalbum.co.uk/mystery/mystery05.htm has a photo of Mountaineer and says it's boiler was still there in 2004.

Not a myth, so technically not belonging in this thread - the result of a trip to search out Sweden's strategic reserve - three untouched locomotives.

Made into two programmes by "Eisenbahn Romantik" - German enthusiast programme.

The excursion to dig them out of the shed:

A few years later now running in preservation after five decades wait:

Let me know if any questions as to the German! I'm sure a cursory google can say more about the locomotives in question

Apparently thats in Vietnam, but wonder the story of Lyd after the boat left? If I ever find Lyd, would turn up unannounced at a Woody Bay Gala with a TV crew to record the expressions!

One, at least did not get pushed into the harbour. This one, OKH-In 10, (presumably former) WD No. 8, photographed in RAW Tempelhof, West Berlin in October 1953. Apparently it had a brake overhaul on May 5th, 1944 at Cottbus. I wonder what they thought of it? "And the Englander think they are going to win with locos like this?"

Note the attachment to the cab to stop rainwater dripping over the Driver!

Incidentally, a few WD Dean Goods were also found scattered about Germany and other countries.

Apologies if this sounds stupid but did the Germans have the equvilent of 'T-force' that went in and checked out captured enemy equipment? Wonder what they made of Mr Fowlers 0-6-0? What happened to the two that went over to Ireland?

More than a few. I think around 50 of 70 odd survived first German then Allied fire. 20 plus were sent to China, a handful to Italy, a couple behind the Iron Curtain and the rest were scrapped in France/Belgium/UK, I think mostly in the late 40s. The GWR didn't buy any back from the MOD.

I read an account of a POW who escaped from a camp in Poland in 1941 and hoping to stowaway on a freight train headed West. He was amazed to see a Dean Goods in the yard. The Germans assessed all locos captured in 1940 and really utilised them.

That sort of answers my question then. Be great to see any paper work on how to use them 'Zis is un Jinty do not fire it like my little tank' as Herr Gruber vould say!
