Wouldn't say it's King's Lynn, either. The locking room seems too low. As a complete guess, I'd say Sleaford/Boston area.

No I do not currently volunteer
The home shed of the loco in the background was New England if that helps.

But 8820 [later 62571] was a Cambridge loco so the presumption of Cambridge is strong; comparing the 2 photographs however the line position is wrong IMHO. The Y3 image looks onto the shed with the curve running from left lower to right upper but the B2 shot shows the back of the signalbox; if viewing from the same position as the Y3 scene then the line runs from left upper to right lower. On the assumption however that the depot had more than one (signalbox-control;led) access then Cambridge could be a valid location.

That said Y3 78 later became 68176 and this loco was allocated to Sheffield; assuming local limits could it be Darnall and 8820 had worked a train (from Harwich ?) into Sheffield area ?

all these 1930's photos came from the same photographer based in the South of England, so I would say Cambridge the best bet

Re Fred Kerr's posting, Darnall was built during WW2 so the Y3 would have been renumbered by the time it was transferred there.

Yeadons Register records it new to Norwich, then Cambridge on 30/11/35, Retford on 23/12/35, Cambridge again on 17/1/36, Colchester on 1/1/37, Cambridge yet again on 28/5/37. From there it went to Neasden on 28/8/41 and spent the remainder of its life on the GC Section.

Have you got a date to help narrow things down a bit?
