I'm not the only one that is still filming like this as Mr Harnetty & Ian Hardman are still filming on-board charter trains like this and anyway when I was on the tour I checked with stewards and they said there wasn't a problem with it as long as I was careful and pulled my head in when trains were passing in the other direction. I only had the camera out for most of the trip as I hadn't got any goggles with me. How I do my filming is my choice not yours, I was doing this for people who enjoy watching footage from on-board a railtour.

If anyone else here has a problem with my filming then why not keep it to yourself or say it to my face.

It's not a matter of someone here having a personal problem. It is concern that the considerable amount of fuss on this subject in recent weeks could escalate, from the present situation of stewards on some trains being stricter than on others, to strict enforcement on all railtours or to the fitting of bars on windows. Many of us on here have happily stuck our heads out of windows in the past, but anyone who does it now from a moving train is risking the wrath of the powers that be, whether or not a steward objects at the time.

Most of us would see no harm in having a camera just outside, but even that is risking complaints.

Participants in this forum have few opportunities to meet each other face to face.

Edit: I was half intending to post this on the droplights thread but it's here now.

Well the people who would be most interested would be Statesman/WCRC so perhaps they could be left to deal with the matter rather than the judge and jury acting on here?

Seeing as you deleted my comments on your video I will say again that myself and some friends that rode on the 10th of June Fellsman were told no window hanging so can't see why the rules would change just for you !

Good grief, talk about a humour bypass!!!
If you've been allowed to have your just camera out of the window by the stewards 'officially', and the tour operator/WCRC has sanctioned it then that's good, although I do tend to agree that it might set a bad example, and maybe should not have been posted at this time.
You sound like the bloke I was next to once at Culgaith. My tripod with video camera was set up, 15 minutes to go so I had a packet of crisps....he said "You aren't going to eat those when it comes are you?". My reply was "Yes, I love the sound of crackling crisps on my soundtracks....what do you think I'm going to do? (idiot)"

Iv never filmed at Culgaith, now iv been traveling on railtours for years and I know the safe spots where it's ok for filming aslong as your extra careful. If you look at the video you will find there isn't that much on the WCML apart from the arrival in Preston & Lancaster departures. With the run up the Settle and Carlisle there was no traffic heading south when the tour was going north up the route apart from a freight train at Long Preston. With the return run southbound there was one passenger service coming into Kirkby Stephen but wasn't traveling at high speed. It was also way too hot aswell to just be sat down that day as it was near 35c that day, for most of the run I had just the camera out the window and not my head except for some few sections when I needed to cool off. But when stationary at places like Hellifield and Appleby I had either my head out or I was on the platform getting some footage of 46115 Scots Guardsman.

I Am aware of what's going on at present with the talk about people possibly taking risks on charters but I kept safe and it's not like iv been trespassing on the railway. I knew when it was and when it wasn't safe to window hang. Tunnels were an absolute no no & I wasn't stupid to film on the vegetation side of the train when moving.

There was reason behind deleting those comments, when I was on that run I had no problems with any of the stewards and not once did any of them bring up the rule saying no window hanging and that I needed to sit down. Now iv said this a dozen times that I had just the camera out for the majority of the trip with my head only out at certain points as it was 35c that day. Now that was sheer luck as I might not be as lucky next time as Iv got a second Fellsman trip booked for this year. Iv also got 2 Shakespeare Express's booked but the first might be axed due to the ongoing steam ban on the western region as it is so ruddy warm at present. Even when some stewards went past me on the return trip they didn't have an issue with me having the camera out of the window for the return trip up the S&C but I can safely say I kept safe on the trip and took no risks. Heck if it makes everyone happy I will just stop my filming on-board charters after the 2015 season.

I think this gentlemens method of filming from inside the coach has to be more safe. The quality etc is not affected so much by the stains on the windows and reflection of the sun.
    Keep them coming sir:Saywhat:

That's what im trying to tell everyone but I feel that everyone is picking on me just for enjoying something that I like doing. I had just the camera out for most of this trip but I did have my head out at certain points as it was 35c that day. I Have no clue if VNTL will even allow anybody to window hang now let alone have just the camera out the window as the head stewards a jobsworth. When it came to taking photographs I had to have my head out as I look through the small screen and not off the big LCD screen that the camera has as it's easier to see and can take photos much faster. 2015 Hasn't been the best for me as besides the disaster on January 24th when Leander failed, loosing my place in college due to being unwell and a friends death im feeling depressed and this is what's keeping me happy. Next outing on a railtour for me isn't till 19th July on-board "The Shakespeare Express" but this could be axed due to the ongoing steam ban on the western region. Yorkshire's also on amber at present and it's why 46115 wasn't working too hard the other day.

It's not a case of picking on you David in any way as when I spoke with Statesman rail on the phone the chap said no window hanging would be allowed plus the droplight also has a sign saying the same . I know I used to do the same but with Network rail and ORR keeping a close eye on West coast I would not even think about filming any onboard stuff that could jeopardise mainline steam at this time .

For general information there are observers from the ORR out and about, one in particular has been seen several times recently at Hellifield and on board both service trains and the Dalesman.
