I saw the train at Keynsham this evening and despite being 8 mins early and just 5 miles from it's destination, the class 47 diesel was pushing hard.
The plausible excuse is obvious to me, the driver of the diesel was in a hurry to get home. <BJ>

I gather that the WCRC Class37 at Southall suffered a flash-over while working the ECS+70000 from Southall to Paddington yesterday morning, and had to be rescued by a Class47.

Incorrect the 37 never left southall yard and the 47 was put on before departure from the yard

I understand that it's common practice to run through a non FPL fitted switch like that.

If the switch is sprung-loaded or counter-weighted in the direction of 'normal' traffic, but otherwise free to move, then I'm pretty certain this is permissible. Of course if you do it to any kind of locked switch you'll wreck it.

Let's assume that as West Coast uses these sidings a lot, they know what is and is not permissible when trailing across these points.

I read on Nat pres or that other site sometime ago, a comment from a man who said it was his job to know about the assistance of trains from the rear. He said that it was only permitted at designated sites e.g. Lickey incline . If a train loco' failed, assistance from the rear could be given at reduced speed to the first point where the assisting loco could be put on the front .Trains like the current top and tailing ,the driver on the rear loco must be given permission to shove .He said who would that person be ? ,not someone sitting in a office as this could happen at day or night. So it could only be a inspector or someone in charge .What is happening then ?.Does the inspector say before leaving give us a shove when you feel like it ,or give orders as the train is on its journey.
Sorry about the explanation, the original was much better explained.

A pretty feeble and unjustifiable reason though.

Yes but from a position of involvement and on board, not an arm chair.

I thought the rear end driver will push only when asked to by the leading engine. He should not do it because he feels like it. This is what upsets customers.

The road through Keynsham is pretty flat and the train would normally be well into its stride by this point.

It beggars belieft that this is going on.

Only the leading driver will know why he asked for assistance

We say 60007 a few weeks ago, and watched it with 3 friends, one of which was involved when it was originally preserved.

When they saw the diesel on the back, they all commented the train was being pushed, when in effect the diesel was doing nothing, AND, they all commented that was not what they would pay to do.

None of them have ever done a mainline tour, and the existence of the diesel should be a warning that "normal" people view them as, I am sure they would pay extra for a diesel to follow immediately behind, and they get what they paid for.

That's what many people post here on Nat Pres day in and day out.

    Their opinions.

But thank you for giving it a specific mention here.
