The 47 was pushing quite hard out of Redhill, but the heavy rain made it cold enough for some good exhaust.

Not sure why you would want to try to connect a steam charter passing some three hours earlier with that incident?

Cows were reported ninety minutes previously, so not beyond the realms of possibility that someone left a gate open. An inspection train was sent through at caution but found nothing so normal speeds were resumed.

The propensity to make visible steam is more due to the humidity of the atmosphere than the temperature. As visitors to China know, you can lose steam effects at very low temperatures in the winter because the atmosphere is bone dry.

I notice our "man of the moment" hasn't replied to the valid reason as to why the diesel has to be on, funny that......

I hope you are not referring to me? If so keep your opinions to yourself!
Nothing funny at all, I decide how & when I respond to posts.
See sad Ralph has to put a "like" on it. I wonder why?

I think it a fair point that a diesel is there for shunting moves, even insurance, alhtough I doubt if this is the reason. Everybody from the steam fraternity though, who would travel and I count myself in this, is put off by regular images of the trailing diesel pushing the darned train around. West Coast really could learn a lesson from DB and EWS before them. There is ample footage even back to the 1990's where inspectors make it clear that when a diesel is attached (the VSOE is a classic example), assistance must not be provided and only will be, when requested from the leading engine. This may be significant falling speeds on a gradient or the locomotive in trouble. I know people have a go at Buseng but he is passionate about this subject and he should be allowed to express his views freely. My last trip was the double headed Black 5's in Kent last December. A brilliant day out made all the more enjoyable because, you've guessed it, the diesel which pushed up to Grosvenor Bridge went no further than that.
