    GER coach bodies for sale.
    My apologies if this has already been posted (I did do a search) but the HRA April 2015 Newsletter includes an item on 2 GER coach bodies, currently forming part of a (you've guessed it) bungalow, that is due for demolition. The bodies are from GER 6 wheel luggage composites.
    From the newsletter:
    "I am aware that there are two ex GER carriages that currently form a house (in South Wootton, near Kings Lynn) and that building has recently been sold. The new owner is only interested in the plot and wishes the carriages to be removed. The new owner will be removing the surrounding structure, and disconnecting the services, thus making the carriages accessible. If any heritage railway is interested in taking the 6 wheeler bodies could they please let me know. (Carriage photographs are available)
    The two, late 1890's, carriages were grounded in about 1920 and owing to being roofed over and remaining a house until late last year, appear to be in very good condition. One seems to be a 1st/3rd Composite with a central luggage section. This vehicle has no internal partitions but with its central double doors would, with suitable running gear, make an ideal vehicle for carrying persons with disabilities. The other is also a 1st/3rd composite but is a lavatory vehicle. The partitions are largely intact and the arrangement for the lavatories are clearly evident: floor markings and window arrangement make this beyond doubt. Arrangements for the carriages removal are nominally in place with a local recovery firm. Clive Baker."

    I know there is quite a following for the GER, especially with the NNR and the MNR and that GER rolling stock etc isn't exactly that common. I'm also aware of the labour of love needed to restore and maintain beauties like these in places such as the IOWSR etc. However, I would guess that these 2 bodies would be in very good nick compared to some that have returned to service. As I say, apologies if this is old news.

    I think that these are well known about in E. Anglian preservation circles, but most of the local Heritage Railways have as many ex GER coach bodies as they can cope with! They are not all that uncommon, as the GE and the LNER did a healthy trade, from the 1880s until WW2, in selling redundant coach bodies- I have a copy of a "flyer" handed out at Liverpool St. in the 1880s, advertising "Old carriage bodies, suitable for (various uses) £5 each, delivered to your nearest Great Eastern station". It must have been quite a lucrative business, as there were scores of them about and examples still crop up on a regular basis. Many are listed in the VCT Carriage Register, but there are others still not identified, well hidden within seemingly ordinary bungalows, etc. The demise of 4 and 6-wheelers, plus the 1947 Town & Country Planning Act, put a stop to the business.

    We have several ex GER coaches ,and they do take a lot of work ,we are fortunate to have a certain amount of parts , although we are always prepared to look at
    coaches that are offered from time to time , sometimes some rare and interesting stuff turns up.
    Would like to see more for sale ,or exchange items on here , maybe we can help each other even more ,with parts etc.
