Yes but as you are well aware I do spend a lot of time on rail tours of various types, 15 so far this year, so therefore I feel able to comment from a position of some one who does travel rather than someone who doesn't.

61306 passed Berrylands 2E. Sounded good at speed with the 47 on the rear doing little or nothing.

They are not on the train because, like myself, they are not prepared to pay for not as described products. ie not getting what you pay for - a steam tour, not a box shoved one.
It seems to be getting more common for boxes to shove in seemingly inappropriate places now. Look at Mr K's video at Brookwood today for instance.
Some people like to spend wisely & not throw their money away.

Must of ran out of fuel then from the earlier shoving attempts.

Trouble is, it could be claimed its not exactly a position of impartiality, with a vested interest in defending an inferior product. Not that I would claim that of course, As I wasn't complaining about a diesel on the back. Aesthetically it tidies up the back nicely, there is nothing quite so ugly as the back end of a Mk1.

I assumed Mayflower's driver caused it by working too hard due to the load. Wasn't that the case?

Actually I am quite peed off about that comment, I work quite hard to get the audio right and you come along and blindly ignore all the good B1 noises in 3/4 of the video.

To bad, it could be 1) round ended observation car or 2) platform on the back.

    Just messing around. Cheers

Like either of those alternatives. Think the tour companies are missing a trick there, you could put a GWR toad on the back and serve cocktails on the veranda.

I'm beginning to wonder when folks will wake up to the fact its there for op reasons, as following "Carnforthgate" there aren't the loco's or steam crews available at present to have steam both ways!

Folks should be grateful we still have some steam in the south - just. ;)

I plead guilty to sitting at my computer, Ralph, but the point I was making is that, while I'm pleased that RTC isn't suffering a thumping loss on the DCEs, I'm a bit disappointed that apart from the Surrey Hills pullman trips, steam in the south of England this year has largely consisted of 61306 at one end of a set of coaches and a diesel at the other. I like to take my wife on a trip every year (sometimes two) and we usually go Premier dining as a treat. In view of how much this costs, I'm pretty fussy as to what I book on. To reiterate, I'd LOVE to do Weymouth or Swanage again by steam and I'd be willing to pay a bit extra to enjoy what RTC used to offer i.e. no diesel on the back and steam both ways. Unfortnately, none of the operators are offering anything to tempt me at the moment, but I sorely wish they would.

The B1 sounded (and looked) wonderful today and I honestly think that it would be unreasonable to moan about the box on this trip.

The crew deserve plaudits for an excellent show!

And when that insurance for op reasons wasn't there on the recent R Duchy it was actually needed. With a B1 as the prime power provider on the DCE a 2nd loco is needed in places to move the train uphill and the diesel pusher is all that's available so it pushes. The secondary issue is fire risk and again a diesel is prudent in many places on the SW mainline due to adjacent heathland.

Just to go back to the A4 gauging question for a moment. We don't know that 60009 doesn't fit. Since there has been rather a lot of engineering work in the district, it's quite likely that there was insufficient time to check whether she does or doesn't.

Whilst one can accept that track will drift and migrate over a period of time, one can not accept ( or rather should not accept ) that recent or new PW works need to be checked. It should be carried out to spec (and that means loading gauge) in the first place.

It wasn't a reflection on your video. You can only record what's there and you can clearly see & hear the Duff working it's guts out.
The camera never lies & all that!

It doesn't lie true, but you are exaggerating. Most of what I can hear is B1 not a "duff working its guts out"

I really think that things shall get better in the south. 61306, 60163, 60009 every once in awhile. 70000 her performances. Add 34046, 46100, 6024 and hopefully things shall improve not to forget about 70013 and the yearly visits on Princess Elizabeth. Flying Scotsman.
