No need for a pacamac today, though 45231 was towing its own cloud up my bit of Ribblesdale this morning. What on earth were they burning in the firebox this evening? I saw the train at Crosby Garrett and at Langho, and there were great billows of filthy black smoke from the chimney at both places. Very photogenic, and all that, but not what you expect to see on a hot day.

I wonder what Carnforth will send out tomorrow? I'm hoping for one of the Jubilees. It would be quite something to see different locos every day, but I guess the chances of that are fairly slim.

    45231 was11E at Ramsgreave.

Looking down as the train passed under the bridge, what coal remained in the tender appeared to be mainly "slack". As the finer material naturally falls to the bottom this might be expected, but there did seem to be more dust than usual and this may explain the dirty exhaust here and seen by Steamage throughout the day. Of the locos hauling the Fellsman SG always seems to have least coal remaining by the time it reaches Wilpshire summit - larger engine, working hard?

Although early into Blackburn 45231 was held for the late running York to Blackpool North and subsequently passed through Cherry Tree (quickly) just after the very late running Blackpool South to Colne stopped in the station. A fellow watcher had a bit of friendly banter with the driver and told him not to let it happen again!

SG on duty today. Warm sunny morning, looked and sounded well at Hoghton summit 09.03. Several people taking vids from Chapel Lane bridge - so something may appear later. Heard that Leander withdrawn from main line for some boiler work - can't vouch for the accuracy of this info.

With the boiler feathering nicely and the sun being kind once more, LMS 7P Class 4-6-0 No. 46115 'Scots Guardsman' heads today's 'Fellsman' towards Risehill Tunnel

That's dramatic! The foreground shadows are just right to draw the eye to the train. Weren't you lucky?

Sometimes the gods smile on you, must admit its one of my favorites, and yes its about being in the right place at the right time - 10 mins earlier there was no sun just shadow.

Driver Gordon Hodgson must have wanted his tea as he puts 46115 Scots Guardsman to it following a short pathing stop at Barton and Broughton with the returning Fellsman.
