Interesting train movements on this today. No stop at Tiverton Loop and it seems as though it has been held and then passed at Newton Abbot where 45 minutes later, RTT says it remains.

The R D seems to be a fated tour this year.

Very sad news. After Tangmere's incident I was really hoping this trip would be the complete opposite with No.9 putting in a superb performance.
2015 is really turning into a nightmare year for ML Steam. I really feel sorry for the owner of No.9, the passengers and the RTC.

Thanks. Pretty obvious when you look again at all the timings. Had forgotten it was booked an hour at Tiverton.

Not many options at present unless a rescue diesel has come down in 'cloak' mode from Bristol. Depending on the seriousness of the problem, one option could be for UoSA to continue to Plymouth. The train turns there and a rescue DL comes down for the return at 7 pm. This would at least give folk a day out at a destination.

Seen elsewhere that 47832 is to the "rescue". From 1z99 whatever that is.

47832 arrived at Newton Abbot and now looks to be at the head of the train and on the move towards Plymouth.

No they were not and I've seen that comment from you before. It was not needed any more than on a diesel charter. If you mean that it's a good idea 'just in case' then that makes no sense either. Either a loco (or diesel for that matter) is fit to run or it is not. Simple.

Because the loco, on this occasion, should have been up to the job of getting the load over the hills and even a risk averse person like me would have left it behind too. When you draw up a risk matrix you have the safe area where although risky possibilities can be listed they are unexpected/unpredictable and get discounted when you are assessing the risks which need to be covered or ameliorated. Personally the big end failure of a recently overhauled machine with some distance of high speed running on the clock since the overhaul would be regarded as in that safe quadrant and on this occasion those planning the haulage aspects of this tour are probably blameless.

Even modern traction has been known to fail unexpectedly too and if you search you will find many instances of passengers held up for hours by such failures. The coincidence of today's failure after yesterday's high speed dash west will, I guess, be looked into as one of the possible causes when the reason for the mechanical failure is being assessed. However the issue of what type, who can use and how far apart Thunderbird traction should be placed is surely a separate, and national, issue as it seems to affect all TOCs at some point not just steam tour operators.

No the Duchy is never booked to run with a DL. In which NR notice have you seen that formation?
