An impressive aural and visual display from 45690, so very 1967. A most enjoyable sequence Steve, I'm going to watch it again now!! Many thanks for sharing.

    Cheers

Sad to note some heads appearing out of the windows during the last minute or so of the video.

It's just one of those clips where all you have to do is set the cameras up and let the subject matter do the talking. Lovely stuff.

Heads not bodies and don't forget the support coach front window. If the Toc and promoter are ok with it perhaps time for the armchair fossils to get off their high horse.
Otherwise if those who pay to travel stop enjoying themselves and stop travelling there will be no tours for those line side to freeload.

It would be good if sometime someone would organize a steam circular trip via York, Newcastle, Carlisle and Leeds. There has been 1 this year, the Hadrian which was just after the ban was lifted. I don't know how well it was supported.

Attractive as such a trip would be, I don't think those of us from the south could do it without at least one night away; but if it could be timed so as to require only one night rather than two that would help.

Personally I don't 'get' the purpose of circular tours. Surly an out-and-back has the added advantage of extra pick up points prior to a destination, where a circular has only one???!!! Unless you do a double circuit, like the Cotton Mills???

I wrote to James S of WCRC a while ago putting forward an idea regarding the Tyne Valley line
My thoughts were that a train could leave Carlisle approx 9 AM to Newcastle.
A stop could be made at Hexham or Haltwhistle possibly dropping people off to make a trip to the Roman wall and forts.
Train carries on to Newcastle(arriving 11ish) where passengers alight and train heads to Heaton for turning and servicing
Passengers can visit Newcastle or take short Metro trip to Metrocentre for approx. 4 hrs
Train leaves Newcastle approx 3pm picks up Hexham and back Carlisle 5pm
Times would have to fit with existing TT of course

Cotton Mills, double circuit, I think not....
But there have been tours, start Preston/Lancaster, pick up at various other stations to Man Vic, then loop round with first drop off at Lancaster heading back to Vic.

Trips out of York or other northern cities are primarily for us up north conversely those out of London are for those down that way, so why should the operator time them just to suit a few from the other end on the country???

The black Jub on the Waverley 16 August 2015

Last week, the Railway Touring Company enticed me with a £10 reduction to sign up for Sunday's Waverley, then infuriated me two days later by offering a £25 reduction for new bookings! I joined at Skipton but it took another hour before we were ready to leave Hellifield with Stanier 6P 4-6-0 No 45690 Leander, resplendent in its new BR black livery, with veteran driver Gordon Hodgson at the regulator.

We were off like a rocket, reaching 42 at Long Preston and Settle Junction at 63. We gradually lost speed on the 1 in 100 of the S&C proper, passing Settle at 51, Langcliffe at 45 and the mouth of Taitlands Tunnel at 34. Passing Helwith Bridge at 25 we went up to 35 on the flatter stretch, but were down to 27 at Horton and 29 at Selside, remaining just below 30 all the way to Ribblehead, then it was a steady 21 on the slog up to Blea Moor Tunnel. We ambled along the tops but flew along from Rise Hill to Garsdale (58) before reaching 64 over Dandry Mire viaduct. Remaining in the high 50s to Ais Gill, we then rattled down Mallerstang in the low 60s and all the way to the water stop at Appleby. There were fewer fireworks on the last leg to Carlisle but we did touch 62 at Baron Wood. A creditable run with 11 coaches, but not one for the record books.

On the return we were in the hands of Chris Cubitt, an experienced driver who had however only recently signed the S&C. A slowish start saw us reach Armathwaite at only 52 then Lazonby at 61 and Culgaith at 58. After water at Appleby we hit 51 just before Great Ormside but were down to 30 at Kirkby Stephen and 27 out of Birkett Tunnel. Half way up Mallerstang we had a short blast up to 35 at Shoregill but again speed slipped down to pass Angerholme at 29, with a minimum of 25 just before the summit. The climbing was over now but the running was still restrained until a last blast at around 60 from Stainforth to Settle Junction. Soon back at Hellifield, we said goodbye to Leander as it chuffed back to Carnforth, after an enjoyable, if not spectacular, summer out and back run over the incomparable Settle and Carlisle line.

Video of 45690 Leander climbing the last 3 miles to Ais Gill Summit with yesterday's southbound Waverley. Rather dull conditions (how surprising!) and the livery and full maroon rake convinced me that B&W was the way to go.
