The obvious comment is if the dining trains are packed running on the North Norfolk, without the need for mainline kit and a second loco, why extend them to Cromer?

This was exactly how the NYMR started to "dip our toes" on to the Whitby branch in a joint operation with then franchisee Northern Spirit, but the point was well made at that time that we could fill the trains on the NYMR, so why share the ticket income with a partner to run them elsewhere? Thus started a small group taking the first step down the path that now sees over 100,000 passenger per annum arrive at Whitby by NYMR train.

The answer to that question, as it turned out, was to have a high profile way of starting an "ordinary fare" service, which we were able to do using the 4 non-dining coaches from the back of the Moorlander set a couple of years later, using WCRC as operator for trail services until we got our own Safety Case (as then was) and Track Access Agreement.

This looks a lot like a "toe in the water" job, using 1 loco which has the kit and another with owners who I believe always intended to fit it, and able to work within the restrictions on Sheringham Level Crossing. If it is going to happen next year, I very much doubt North Norfolk can get their own Safety Certificate by then, so a sub-contracted operation between Cromer and Sheringham to prove it can work and demand for a certain type of service. Then it all helps build to something more.

Are Sheringham town centre crossings restricted to evenings only really making them suitable for Dining ? This is an interesting development regardless.

From the article it seems 76084 will still be on the NNR for 2016 then?

AFAIK its not restricted to time and day. The choice to run dining rather than ordinary trains has been made presumably for other reasons.

That is a stated intention, however it will be very different to 76084. The latter is bing registered for full mainline running (as that was always the intention of the owning group) whereas the B12 will probably have a special "Sheringham-Cromer only" ticket, similar to the "mainline" engines limited to Grosmont-Whitby.

The railway website shows the Y14 running today, is there any chance it's likely to be out next Tuesday?
If so I should be able to visit...
    TIA

Quick update - not a cast iron guarantee but I hear that further problems with the Y14 will likely see it replaced on Tuesday by another locomotive. In the meantime the weekend's trains are booked to be 9F and Black 5 operated. Diesels are Class 27 Saturday, Class 31 Sunday.
