Still very short sighted I see.
Why should I give up because people don't agree with my opinion....

Either it is fit to run or it isnt. If the people at Buckfast do the repair properly then it should be fine. I have had many hundreds if miles behind this engine in recent years and in Scotland in the 1960s with no problems but of course there is always a first time

    I beg to differ.
Years ago I lived backing onto the Berkeswell loop, this line had almost no service on it but every morning Mon-Fri only we had a Manchester express around 8-30am.
This working would have anything from a pair of black 5's, Jubilees a scot or a Brit.
These were invariably foreign engines and the source of much talk in the spotting community.
Years later I was talking to Dick Blenkinsop and mentioned this train and its unusual route.
Apparently this was a running in turn from Crewe, the engines working from Crewe to Rugby and working next days train.
This train ran from Rugby to Leamington Spa (Avenue) to Kenilworth turning off at Kenilworth junction and resuming a more normal route at Berkeswell junction

South Devon Railway Engineering at Buckfastleigh have made the wheel drop pit available and the offending axlebox has been removed. It will be sent to LNWR at Crewe for re-metalling.

I think Crewe also used the Shrewsbury service as a running in turn, hence the number of shiny LM pacifics that appeared there. But I guess it depends on what you mean by a "wizz round the block".

I think what I mean is that they would be expected to be ok with a brief run in to check - my great uncle always said sometimes they would get engines straight from works to shed and that was their run in turn post overhaul! Just what he said :)

    Re: Running in
I believe that all steam engines were run in after a significant overhaul (I don't know the definition of significant but it's more than a weekly valves and tubes inspection and less than a rebuild). I suspect, but don't know for sure, that express engines would be more thoroughly run in than shunters. There were lots of pictures in the 60s press of engines turning up on weird duties (often a Bulleid Pacific with 2 on) subtitled "on a running in turn" from Eastleigh/Ashford etc.

It really would be helpful on this forum if people when they are making statements could indicate whether they know something or whether it is their opinion (imho works as shorthand).

Perhaps it's just as well that a couple of colleagues have turned up to buy me beer otherwise my next post, already forming, would probably not have been positive about this thread!

Best wishes to all who love steam (and it's not very clear from some of the posts who does and who doesn't...)

    Mike

Oh damn. Looks like Mike going off for a beer has denied us a negative post and the resulting Nat Pres nightly punch up.

TV tonight is rubbish so I'll have to go over the New General Comment to see what's bubbling over there.

Oh. I think I need an IMHO somewhere, but not sure. Someone tell me where to stick it would they please?

    :)

Do those who know these things have an estimate when No 9 will be ready?? Cant see it running Saturday so that begs the question what will take its place??

Any individual or group involved in running a Gresley Pacific may be interested in answers to the question of a long standing design issue that impacts on the reliability or the long term cost of running the machine they are concerned with. On the other hand they might just be content with coping with the locomotive as it is. If JH wanted to know what was happening with Bittern when it was at work he most certainly has the resources to find out. But again he may well be contented. Knowing the answer after all these years would be of interest though.

Dear Mr Yeti, I am confident that you can find somewhere to stick your IMHO if needed.
Question - In 1966 I recorded a start to pass time from Basingstoke to Hook of 6:20 with Yes Tor and 8 on - I need to check my notes for the exact load which definitely included at least one van (might have been 8+ van or 8 including van - I never realised it would matter at the time). At the time, anecdotally, this was seen as a Nine Elms record although it was eclipsed a little while after I believe. The little red notebook is up in the loft somewhere so I am struggling with the details - don't remember the driver's name (quote - "let's give them a bit of Deltic acceleration shall we" - regulator up in the roof) but the fireman was Don Clarke of renown in this column. Do you know of a better effort - I was disappointed to time sub 6 minutes behind a Warship a few weeks later but hey ho - that's progress.

    Owls hooting as I write

Way of topic but no worse than much else. How about 5 min 50 sec with Clan Line in June 67. Passed Hook at 85 mph and was still accelerating. There will be many like that. The Yeti will know! Suggest you send a conversation message.

As for the Royal Duchy, I would be optimistic of a "third time lucky" event on Sept 6th.

Nah, it was fine till the wheel fell down that hole. How can they allow track defect like that? in the shed too.
