The cylinders, mostly, although that would be apparent only to someone who knows the locos well. I can't see any running department men being happy with bits stuck on here and there, especially when he comes to open the smokebox door!

No. They started to get the Stanier nine-ton tenders from about 1933 or 1934. They were mostly built for the Jubilees, these engines getting the Scots' Fowler tenders from new instead.

Thanks from me also. I "cabbed" 46112 and, if I remember correctly, it was on the scrap line somewhere, so presumably Annesley. Can't remember the date but I may have it noted somewhere. Do you know the date of the photo?

It is also worth remembering that paint will often fade over time due to the effects of weather and light exposure. Varnishes can also yellow and darken.

Although slightly out-of-place in the "steam traction" forum, I could cite the example of Robert, the miniature "Western" at the Ruislip Lido Railway. In the early '80s, it was painted a dark blue - a fairly good match for BR rail blue. However, the colour faded over time. Each time the loco was repainted, paint would be chosen to match the previous coat of paint...which, by that point, was lighter than it had originally been. By the mid-2000s the engine was sky blue!

It was April 1964, 46163 was in steam but 46167 below didn't look likely to do much work despite the coaled tender.

Thanks Dave, that makes sense for me because 46163 and 46167 were two of the thirteen Scots I saw, and I believe 46167 was withdrawn shortly afterwards. So Annesley it was.

I wonder when it was, I'm thinking I ought to try and find out.

Any more news on 46100 yet? 45699 seems to have overtaken it as regards the next LMS design 4-6-0 that should go green on here at the mo!

Only A4's (well at least one of them did) could carry purple. If you did want a Scot in somthing other than Red, Black or dark green how about apple green with British Railways on the tender? One of them did carry this I Just cant remember what one! My mate had the old Palitoy model of it.

There are a few more, more subtle differences, but that's the most obvious...

Midland and LMS red were the same but the Midland version looked richer probably because of a brown rather than grey undercoat and more coats of vanish on top. I think the BR version was the same as the standard coaching stock red but as someone has already said colour perception can play tricks and colours can look very different in different lighting conditions.
