A blast from my past in the '70's.

72 may be back in time for the KWVR's 50th anniversary after sale to Andy Booth

It is good to see that 72 is going to be restored, if not on the KWVR, and I'm sure there will be plenty of smaller lines keen to hire it. Reading the press release though suggests that it is only marginally up to the job on the KWVR. If that is the case, then will we ever see the similarly sized Jinty and 57XX run there again? Or can we expect them to be released on to other lines that can make more appropriate use of them?

Excellent news. Had some good runs behind her in the 1970s. One of the more unusual ones being paired with GNR no.990.

Lost much arm hair firing her, not least on the epic trial using coke to try and cure the copious smoke emissions she was prone too. Two of us firing, emptied the bunker before we reached Haworth!

Guessing this will be the trial loco for departure out of Haworth with the current restrictions at Ingrow?

Not 100% sure but I've read somewhere that only smaller loads can go from Haworth (due to the amount of room there is to manover the trailer - again so I believe).

So yea, a bit of a trial, but at the same time I don't think it's the solution to the Ingrow issue - but it's another alternative :)

This is good news all round - the KWVR may well be able to feature one of the two locos which operated its first trains in 1968 for the 50th anniversary celebrations without the expense of overhauling an engine which is now of limited use while 30072 gets a new lease of life. Mr Booth hires his engines out and I'd suspect there will be plenty of lines which will show interest. The Spa Valley, a few miles from where I live, is less steeply graded that the KWVR and doesn't run such long trains. Although this is only my personal opinion, I'd imagine that they, for one, may well be interested in hiring an ex-SR tank loco of the right power for the line.

Pure speculation but given that Mr Greeenwood is the co-owner of 34092, I wonder if the proceeds of the sale might be used to fit all the elecronic gubbins needed for main line operation? He has stated that this is his desire if the money could be found. We'll have to wait and see, but it would be great to see 34092 out on the national network again.

(P.S.: Mods, shouldn't this thread be moved to "Steam traction"?)

Just so you know KWVR are overhauling 41241 with the aim of steaming it for 2018 so fingers crossed we could see the pair together. #FingersCrossed

I must admit I always thought that 72 was a KWVR-owned engine. Had many runs behind it in the '70s & later.
Whilst it's great to see it may steam again in time for KWVR 50, I'm a little sad that it won't remain as part of the Railway's permanent collection, given that it has such a place in KWVR history. But at least it's going to be overhauled.

I know what you mean but surely its better to see it doing some work rather than sat in the shed at Oxenhope?

last time i saw 30072 it was powering shuttles down the sidings next to the portsmouth line at woking 150, as to 34092 going main line, ohh yes please, double headed spam cans from waterloo to plymouth , :):) even if it is over the wrong route via Reading, Swindon, Exeter,

i would rather see 41298 , 41312, 41313, 41241 all in steam in the same place, at the same time. along with any other ivatt engines that can make it, somewhere like the SVR?

Was it the 2011 ASG on the SVR when 41241 visited to run alongside 46443 and the returning 43106? Pretty sure the Stanier mogul ran at that event too, so you're getting close to that line up already.

2009, I sampled 41241 double heading with 43106 on the saturday evening with a few bottles of Titanic, what an evening that was! :)

I remember a cracking run with them south between Bewdley and kiddy. Then loco superintendent john Robinson was on the pig, ensuring a very spritely 25mph.

IIRC First gala since overhaul, and I don't think it completed all of its turns. Think it got subbed at Bridgnorth for 4566 at one point.
