    Whilst remembered for the national motor museum at Beaulieu, its worth remembering that without Lord Montagu we wouldn't have Stowe & 3 Pullman cars surviving into preservation;

    Sad news indeed. Amongst other things, he was the Bluebell Railway PLC President, and as you say, saviour of "Stowe".

    Of those three Pullman cars, one (Fingall, a Kitchen First) is now on the Bluebell Railway. One (Agatha) is at Carnforth and now in need of restoration. Sadly one (Car 35) was scrapped, I think probably while still at Beaulieu.

    Edit: apparently Agatha is now at Stewarts Lane.
    RIP.

    The BBC TV piece spent rather too much time on his activities in the early 1950's (court cases etc) for my liking as if that actually was a significant part of his life that he would be remembered for, (although it did lead indirectly to changes in the law regarding homosexuality). No mention was made, for example, that he leaves a wife and three children. I suspect the local communities of Beaulieu and Buckler's Hard, associated charities and vehicle preservation groups will see fit to remember him differently and with a more balanced outlook.

    I was unaware of his sexuality and now I am it makes no difference whatsoever. Remember the man for what he achieved, not for his private life.

    As far as I understand it, his court case was one of the events that led to a change in the law so is worthy of mention.
