A Q1, methinks. Glimpsing the 'dustbin' above the NRM's 'Chinese' locomotive as I type.

Update on the Clan Website, New chairman.
This project has been quietly putting all the Dots in place, all that is needed is a bit more support to join up those dots a little more quickly
PS Was that 72010's smokebox wrapper plate in the background of the Flying Scotsman at Rileys clip on the Beeb this weekend ?

Indeed it is great news for the project. He sounds like a very useful person to have on board. I didn't see the BEEB programme but if it showed outside the works, it quite possibly was the smokebox and wrapper plate. I don't expect they will have moved since I was there 4 years ago.

If you follow the link, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33584691 you will find the Beeb article on Flying Scotsman, and yes you do see our smokebox at three different points in the report.

Thanks Bob, I am pleased to see it inside because it would have not been improved sitting outside rusting away. Are the other items on site stored inside as well?

All smokebox components are inside as far as I am aware - plus others that have been moved there. Though they will not be there for much longer...

Is the Clan moving away from Rileys then? Or do you mean with the upcoming move of Rileys to his new site?

We are not leaving Riley's, and it has nothing to do with Riley's upcoming move. As I said, we have moved some items to Riley's, as they are doing some work for us at present. The result will be seen at the end of this month, or so Riley's are telling us. I will tell more when I have firm news to give.

I don't recall the LMS-style recessed handles being applied to any of the Clans in service (not that I was around to see them in any case!). Happy to be corrected, though.

I was thinking of the western region ones, more like brass lined slots really, given to some Brits. 72010 is pretty much as per the latest set of drawings drawings (thus far) so that mod must have been a Western region thing only and not incorporated into Brit/ Clan drawings

But weren't the next batch of Clans designed for the Southern Region, not the Western? ;)

Interesting thought has just occurred to me: had they been built, would the next batch have had six lamp irons? Is Hengist going to have four or six?

Edit: some pictures here: http://www.semgonline.com/steam/britannia_01.html which show that the Southern region Britannias had for a period an extra set of lamp irons either side of the smokebox and also, interestingly, for a period extended buffer beam irons, in pseudo Brighton-style. (but not the true Brighton pattern of low and high buffer-beam irons).

Noted by C.J. Allen in British Pacific locomotives (page 207): 70026 Polar Star working an excursion from Treherbert to Paddington failed to observe a speed restriction when being diverted from fast to slow roads at Milton led to eleven deaths on the train. It was partly due to the inexperience of the driver and fireman, and not being used to left hand drive locomotives. Poor visibility was also blamed. This led to the removal of the handrails on the smoke deflectors of Western Region locomotives.

As you say, Swindon modified the smoke deflectors on the Western Region allocated Britannias, except for 70021, which moved to the LM Region in 1958. However, Derby also produced a drawing for modifying the smoke deflectors of the Britannias only, not the Clans, with two hand holes, similar to those on the Duchesses. Not all of the Britannias were modified, some retaining their hand rails until withdrawal.

That's right Tom, obviously less prone to 'Blaming the tools' just because they weren't from Swindon there... but you would think the mod would be enshrined in the design if it was worthwhile(?) ... Having said that they never bothered with the 9f's and Clans which have better forward visibility...( narrower smokebox) and as for Lamp Irons anyone wants to donate a couple more I'm sure they'll stick 'em on.
