Here here Al. Yes it really should be that simple. 10 coach max so it can use any if the main line platforms and charge what it takes to make it viable. Will still be cheaper and easier than the long drive to Tyseley or train /drive to access something like the Dalesman

Its ok, I'll dub a nice sounding loco on it - something from the LNER maybe, they made them sound like steam trains.

Thank you for letting us know. I was planning to see it at Three Bridges on the return and while it's disappointing that it won't be running all the way back, I'd rather know the bad news now than in 8 hours' time after a wasted journey.

Come on Al, don't forget the Torbay Express from Bristol . The steam tour where common sense still prevails. It's like a journey back in time. Do you remember when in the old days you could stand at the end of the coach and were even allowed to look out of the window? Happy days ..... ;) <BJ>

Oh well I won't bother heading out this evening then, think some hierachy needs to start the long walk to knock on the NR door and have a quiet, firm word!

Shame as Tangmere was going well this morning at Bosham.

Great idea. You do realise, however, that once all the arrangements are made, NR will change them 24 hours or less before departure !!

I really can't see that happening again.

    So very sad.

And who was the TOC? DBS. Shame neither UKRT nor Pathfinder seem to have much interest in steam these days.

Really grateful for all the advice. Perhaps we should add Bristol to the list of places we could all move to? And as for Tornado from Victoria, that fails on the preferred departure station and also the fact that there is no destination other than Victoria. (Shalford doesn't count, I am afraid!)

But seriously, you are right to imply that only DBS (with UKRT) - witness the Solent & Sarum - seems to have the means to give us proper steam in the south/south east. Never thought I would say it but in this specific context it seems that both SD and the RTC are a lost cause.... and by that I guess that I really mean WCRC.

One elongated vista of Tangers crossing the Itchen, and then cruising to a halt at the water stop, and a rather more routine shot at Redbridge.

Now that Redbridge shot would have worked if you had been stood in the river in your waders.

Network Rail really likes to rub it in.
    • First of all they realise at the last minute that their weekend engineering work means that Tangmere has to come off this train at Eastleigh.
    • Then they come up with a more than half decent path for the engine and POB to get back to Southall that includes 30 minutes from Eastleigh to passing Basingstoke. (The last path I could find was 41 minutes start to stop and even the memorable Clan Line trip was given 33 minutes to pass.)
OK - It's not turning out like that in practice because Tangmere has missed her slot but given the apparent difficulty in giving steam a good path up to Roundwood, how is it that when it suits them NR can find such a thing for a light engine movement, for goodness sake? I give up. :Rage:
