I was on their website and heard that ads had been sent out in rail preservation magazines. How is it going with the 8P? So much is based in Crewe these days.

    Cheers

According to Steam Railway the 'Duke' has a decent chance of steaming in 2018, they've found someone willing to write a cheque for an unspecified amount.

And apparantly the Brass numbers will be no more. 71000 will emerge as it did from Crewe in 1954

Fair enough but I'm quoting from what I have in front of me, it'll also be running with lion over the wheel rather than ferret and dartboard

From what i understand a member passed away and has left a very large cheque to the Duke. So this should give them enough to start to overhaul. Good luck to them and i hope to see it in steam in the not too distant future.

Same here. I've yet to sample the Duke on the main line and am very keen to do so. My only run behind it was a short trip on the WSR in 1995, alighting at Washford. Kentsford Bank behind, say, a Manor or a Large Prairie can be fun, but 71000 didn't actually seem aware that there was an uphill gradient at all, let alone that parts of it were as steep as 1 in 74.

The 1 in 49 between Grosmont and Goathland didn't seem to bother it much either. Hopefully it will make a return visit one day.

Looks like there is a bit of a setback with the overhaul.
Just read the latest SR arrived today, seems LNWR Crewe are now "too busy" to undertake the overhaul.
Look as if they are cutting down on third party work & want to concentrate on "in house" work.
Mention has been made of 35028's overhaul, stated that as work has started it will continue.
Another overhaul location may have to be looked for.
Possibly Riley's now 60103 is nearing completion?

    Shame on them.
Why? they have their own fleet to maintain, and they know they'll be able to do that work as it suits them rather than have to wait for a third party to be able to afford to pay them. It's a commercial decision, and we should respect that.

I think it will be increasingly difficult to get the big "houses" to undertake overhauls unless its a start ---> finish complete job with all monies available. Can't blame them really, it cant be helpful to have a partially finished job sitting around for potentially 5+ years with no work going on.

Saying No is always hard to do and I think Crewe should be applauded for their honesty - knowing the situation before the job starts is better than stripping a loco and it ending up in bits for 10 years...

I don't think it's just the money. It's also that as time marches on, the work required increases which makes it more difficult to balance the contract work with the in house work. That is a problem that is not unique to LNWR.

Not sure of the legalities here?
Wasn't the work agreed to be carried out originally, was some form of contract agreed/signed?

Don't go there. If it comes to legal arguments we know which party has the deeper pockets!

Well, I think Tyseley might be a good option. What do I know though?

I'm sure they thought of that and any potential situations when they drew up the contract if indeed one exists.

I can understand LNWR starting to refuse work. With the amount of engines the group/Hoskins owns he will surely have enough work to keep his employees busy without the need for distractions of other loco societies. And then when they start moaning saying the work isnt done on time because he has used the engineers to work on his own locos. It looks like with the people being taken on for coaches that he is creating his own rake/s for his engines to use also so its a one stop shop for his business set up. Im sure if there is the odd times when LNWR are not busy he can slip in contract work to keep the staff in work. But at that point he can choose loco societies who have enough to pay for the overhaul in one go, not groups saying well do a bit then stop then do a bit.
