There will probably be a trickle down effect where contract jobs that might have been done at Crewe pass to other parts of the "cottage industry" as Mr Meanley described it in the Scotsman report, where capacity exists.
The key issue is recruitment and development of competence throughout the industry, which could turn out to be the limiting factor to potential growth.

Right now, I'm in shock. I didn't think the Duke was going back to Riley's after leaving the east Lancashire railway. Crewe not working out here obviously so Tyseley it is. I couldn't be happier for them. Honestly, I just guessed.

    Cheers

Waiting until FS is finished and the move to the new workshops is completed before taking on new contracts, perhaps?

If anyone fancies dipping into their pockets, please feel free! Will be great to see the Duke back on the mainline.

Thank you. Can you explain what the different entities do? There appears to be a company limited by shares, 71000 Steam Locomotive Ltd (I think - it is not entirely clear from the site who "the Company" is), which is seeking shareholders, and there is a trust, the BR Class 8 Steam Locomotive Trust, which seems to be seeking members. Which entity owns the loco? On the face of it, the former is a private company, which is an unusual vehicle for a public offer as private companies are generally prohibited from offering shares to the public.

As per my avatar, I had the opportunity to drive, and fire, this divine machine on the SVR a few years ago at a gala. I wish the support group all the best, but, this pensioner's financial commitments are full, and closer to home.

    Regards,

I spent a little while talking to Trust people and looking at the loco at Tyseley on Sunday. They had taken the cam boxes out but so far taken the lid off only one of them. Everything inside that one looked fine except that one of the cams had some bruises that looked as if the cam follower had been lifting off at some points in the rotation and then banging back down. The most significant finding so far relevant to the reported problems when the Duke last ran was that one of the exhaust valves is stuck firmly open. So one sixth of the steam flowing into the cylinders would have been flowing straight out again to the blastpipe.

This thread has been quiet for some years, but I can't find a more recent one about the Duke, so this seems the place to pass on some recent news from the BR Class 8 Steam Locomotive Trust.
The report goes on to say that this rod had already been replaced once by BR and once in perservation, so the new one which is now needed will be the fourth. That does suggest something about the stresses which it experiences.
