I'm new to the forum and thought I would give you all an insight in a project me (and a few others) are on with down at the AFRPS.

For a bit of a back story, and i'm sure it's probably been the same for most of you out there, it all started with a fascination as a kid with locomotives and preserved railways. School years i meet my now 'restoration partner' and long time friend. He introduced me the AFRPS society where over the last year or so we have taken on roles such as Diesel and Rolling stock coordinators.

About a year ago now we were informed by someone, with many contacts, in the railway community that he might know of someone who might be looking to get one of his locomotives restored and with it being a yorkshire, Scunthorpe would be an ideal location for it to come.

After meeting with the owner and sorting out all the details transport was arranged. By mid May 2015 the loco was on the move and soon arrived at the AFRPS:

With such a large team available to get the loco up and running we each got on with different aspects of the restoration from electrics, break gear, controls, engine and finally cosmetics.

The restoration has been progressing steadily over the past few months and after discovering a seized fuel rack, which was duly replaced while the original was sent for refurbishment, the engine first run on the 16th May.

After this, all break rigging was removed and cleaned before being refitted.

After the electrics were thoroughly tested and both generator and traction motor dried out and serviced. She put down power for the first time. With new bushes still to bed in performance will further improve over time.

It was at this moment she took pride position with here fellow yorkshire 'Arnold Machin' on the coal road by the AFRPS shed:

Focus now on cosmetics to stop the further takeover of rust before being fully stripped down for a complete repaint once Arnold Machin is back in service.

Excellent work Stephen, will the loco be restored in Ore Mining Branch red livery?

    Cheers,

    Alan

Yes it will. The colour you see there is just an off the shelf colour to protect and treat rust patches and bare metal. Once it gets repainted during the full overhaul it will go into the correct colour.

Just a further update, The loco made its first official trip on Saturday with only one minor hicup (Compressor belts coming off) But after being rescued by 'Loco 1' the belts were re-fitted over lunch and she was back in action for the afternoon.

Yes, it was a great day even if the rubber band came off. I look forward to the next trip behind it exploring the stranger bits of the Scunthorpe network :)
