Nope, tangmere was 20 minutes early, we were about 5 minutes late, looks like the spot we passed her with lots of whistling from 4965

Good try, but sunrise shots can be hard.

Best place used to be Kimberley - De Aar in SA.

When James Gordon was in Kimberley Control you could get a 25NC 4-8-4 on a train heading South at the right time for dawn.

Flat horizons on the climb from Kraankuil to near Poupan with a dirt road running next to the line meant you could drive far enough in front to wait for the sun to just about appear at track level. Leaving enough time to get tripod up, camera mounted and running.

Wind direction, if any wind, was important as you didn't want the dust cloud from the road following you! Been there, done that, got the T shirt! LOL!

Then pan on the loco as it approached, stopping the pan as the loco went across the sun, now at lower wheel height and bursting through between each wheel. Leaving the camera pointing at the sun as all the wagons passed and did the same thing!

    Got that a few times.

It's on at least one of my BBVP films from those days. Can't remember which ones. Someone here may know. Probably one of the "Magic Hours" series.

Would love to get some of those videos on youtube one day. But I guess I'd have to transfer from U-Matic High Band to dvd first and then learn about youtube. Too busy with Owls to do that.

Lucky bu**er - well done to all involved

Here's Tangmere at Didcot North - only just got the sun, there was a big bank of cloud hanging around just to the east - NOTE. I've Photoshopped the ugly electric (National Grid - no 25Kv here....yet) wires out

Tangmere booked to follow HST out of Swindon, but actually allowed out early in front of HST which was only 1 late. Unusual.

Went up Sapperton Okay, though there's a big steam leak on the drivers side cylinder, which has been present all day ! Didn't sound to good leaving Moreton In the Marsh. With lots of slips & a few off beats.

Sorry, its a bit tricky to recreate the Veld on the outskirts of Reading.

I'll paint some Daktari zebra stripes n the side of my Mitsubishi for next time.

My footage of Tangmere doing very well up Sapperton, but a bit concerned by smoke pouring from the side of the engine on the driver's side. Anyway, hope you enjoy.

Tangmere failed at Reading, not sure reason why. Passengers forward by FGW service train.

I guess that makes sense, they can recover it to Southall with minimum disruption from there, rather than cause agro at paddington for the rugby crowds.

The Diesel due to haul it back from Paddington has arrived there and now has nothing to do.
