I have a vague memory from quite a few years ago of a photo of no.6200 being published in Steam Railway magazine, showing it when new, fitted with a Fowler-style dog-catch smokebox door. Has anyone else seen this photo? I'd like to see it again, if it actually exists and isn't just my mind playing tricks on me.

Just looking at photos of 6200 as new in "LM Pacifics a pictorial tribute" by Roundhouse books, the loco has the central fastening with the usual two handles.
Unrebuilt Patriots on the other hand had the series of catches round the circumference of the door.

I stand to be corrected, but as far as I remember No. 6212 Duchess of Kent was the only Princess Royal with a dog clamp smokebox door.

It was indeed 6212. Tom Coleman was not happy at this unauthorised modification, stating that this type of fastening was unsuitable for the type of door and ring mating, but she kept the arrangement for many years.

It's surprising how many differences there were with this small class, valve gear, motion bracket, domeless and domed boilers and I've probably forgotten one or two

I thought that might be what you meant, but she was a STEAM turbine, not gas. It was the GWR which went down that road!

Perhaps, though, rather an extreme example of differences!

I stand corrected - 6212 - so any pics exist of it in that condition?
