Ha ha! As I said to the NR representatives, steam trains have come into your wonderful station since teh 1970's and the fire alarm has never gone off irrespective of the steam locomotive at platform 2. So worry not about alarms, passengers put out on the streets, trains backed to Kingdon Come. Our beloved steam engines have a right to be at Victoria at 10.10 at night and to the poor old NR agents, like it or lump it. The beautiful Mayflower, stayed in Platform 2 for 45 minutes. The NR blokes disappeared, never to be seen again. A brilliant moment that I will cherish for many years. Steam reigns!!

I couldn't agree more - why on earth should anyone be amused or proud of needlessly alienating railway staff? What an appalling advertisement for mainline steam and the people who supposedly support it.

Oh how I yearn for the real world of 50 years ago. When humour and banter was all part of the job of being a railwayman. When a steam locomotive entering a Southern Region London Terminal didn’t run the risk of shutting down the station, causing a tailback of trains as far as Weymouth or Exeter and turning out the entire London Fire Brigade. When the passengers on the station weren’t forced outside to suffer the even worse fate of being poisoned by the emissions from VW diesels.

A time where people went around with smiles on their faces and didn’t snivel and whinge at every possible opportunity. Oh what days they were.

But that's what the Internet was invented for, to allow people to whinge and whine about everything... Oh and for video's of cat's!

I yearn for a time when people stop using 'banter' as an excuse.

Why has banter become such a dirty word to some? Having been in a BR era mess room, I can confirm that what went on in there was mild compared to the alleged altercation at Clapham Jct. Ribald, irreverent and self deprecating, everyone giving as good as they got but all in good humour. The world seems to be full of shrinking violets today.

Sadly it's not uncommon, at least these days, to see obnoxious behaviour or just plain abuse explained away as 'banter' - if the recipient won't stand for it, accuse them of over reacting.

In my experience genuine banter shouldn't need explaining or excusing if judged correctly, and if someone has misjudged a comment they shouldn't blame the person it was directed at for failing to appreciate it.

Do you mean that people have to bother with an excuse and can't just make offensive statements with impunity? One person's banter can all too easily be seen by another person as bullying, disturbing or otherwise offensive behaviour.

GFG has tried to explain the reason a steam locomotive making smoke (which has already been noted isn't compulsory at all times) might be a problem. Surely, that should be the end of the matter - probably fortunate that the NwR guys decided it where they did.

Blaming the equipment is no excuse, the user is in a position to either check before posting, or just be to lazy to bother.
There is also the alternative to correct the dictionary.

The laziest of lazy clichés - if it's 'politically correct' to distinguish between genuine banter and unwarranted abuse then so be it, but I'd like to think it was just plain decency towards other human beings.

On what basis, when I read that sentence it reads fine, the poster has two options, either to check, or be too idle to bother checking....
