I was only referring to the barrel sections, not the whole boiler unit.

I will just add (as an M&GN JRs member but not privy to any insider info) that Black Prince has been running on the NNR for some time now and has just had a 10 year overhaul so I would have thought any purchase would be in full cogniscance of both the day to day running costs and the overall mechanical condition of the loco.

I'm pretty sure 45231 had the front section of the boiler barrel replaced a few years ago too, and that's also not an ex-Barry loco.

I think that the reason was not due to corrosion.

I am pretty sure no boiler was intended for more than about 25 years' service - and that standing around rusting for decades was not in the design brief.
Could we come back to the fantastic news about Black Prince and the NNR...? I for one am very, erm, chuffed.

IIRC there was an attempt to mainline 92212, but the checkrail issue scuppered it.

This was the loco that got me interested in steamers again, back in the 80s when it was running on the exceptionally short East Somerset Railway. Despite all the frustrations of that set up then, the sheer majesty of this wonderful beast got me enthused about steam for the first time since '67. Black Prince even won the heart of the young lady I was with in those days. I wonder whether her love of the 9f has lasted?

I can remember when the B12 returned to steam in the mid nineties, I hoped the NNR would be able to add one or two more BR engines to the permanent home fleet. Thought if they did it would be something like a Jinty or a pannier tank engine. Never in my wildest dreams thought it would be two 2-10-0s! Lol

Just out of interest, has the NNR ever tried to purchase any other ex-BR steam locomotives?

Hmmm! Not that I need an excuse but I think an Anglia plus day rover may be in order for a bit of 9F and 37 thrash! Just need to work out if I can do Holt, Yarmouth, and Lowestoft in one day. I do find the'9F a bit big for NNR' argument a bit disagreeable, theres only a limited loco pool and you cant blame the NNR for snapping up a 2-10-0 that has 9 years left on its ticket. Is a certain pannier still for sale in Brum Btw?

It was the one that ignited the spark for me too, but that was at Longmoor in the late 60s. :)

Can anyone confirm how long 92203 has on her ticket ? One person has publicly pronounced that the ticket expires very soon ?

Timeline Events put out a note about a charter in November with 92203 stating (incorrectly) that it was soon to be out of ticket. It actually still has 8 years to go (assuming it goes full term).

That's what I remembered to as I seem to remember David wanted a decent length of ticket to sell it with.

Didnt he try to sell it at the end of its last ticket?

It never got to the end of its last ticket. He was trying to sell it and it failed with boiler problems. Rather than sell it cheaply, he got it overhauled first.

Sounds like he is happy his engine has got a good home, and the NNR is happy to have the engine. Everyone's a winner lol
