A few years ago...... A class 33 was fuelled from a farmers tanker after running out of diesel near Sleaford.

No doubt the full story will emerge in time. Until then, I'll reserve judgement on whether WCRC should be ridiculed further.

I suspect that the ORR have long since moved on to more important issues on the national network. WCR have generally proved they can run steam tours to the standards demanded. For them surely, it is time to move on. This cock up with the lack of back-up battery is disappointing and they will be chastised for not having a back up. But there was no risk to human life and so it is on to the next tour and what might happen next. Spooky.

Out of interest, how many batteries power these new fangled gubbins and how easy is to to change them?

I do hope that you have the suitable hard evidence to support the written suggestion being placed in the public domain that their FTR are 'shoddy'?

As its blindingly obvious that there is no mythical operator waiting in the wings to replace WCR (if they are so dreadful one would expect the rail tour companies to be departing in droves which would no doubt encourage an alternative) in the absence of a viable or in fact any alternative I suspect their demise would do somewhat more to 'destroy mainline steam'... This constant harping about them does all have air of 'Turkeys voting for Christmas'...

Cue the normal hostility to anyone who dares to query whether WCRC are the devil incarnate destroying steam.. However I often do like evidence before reaching a position... In terms of these batteries what sort of technology are they (modern batteries or older acid filled things which can just die at short notice) equally if they are the avid type what is the h&s implications of just carrying one around in the POB - especially when an unexpected ORR inspection could appear at anytime?

Diesel on the back has been done to death on here, much has been made on here of WCRC being a hard nosed commercial operation, therefore there must be a commercial or operational reason for it, they don't just like letting 47's just have a nice day out. Now if this was a problem for the tour companies, being inundated with complaints I would expect letters to appear fairly regularly apologising to disgruntled passengers and saying it was imposed by the TOC? I have never seen anything referenced on here which suggests that either a) the vast majority of the customers are not complaining or b) no one in here actually travels anymore as it would be fairly pointless to moan on here but not to the company to whom hard cash was paid at which point one would expect the response received to be noted on here?

Finally monopolies are incredibly unhealthy for any market (as the present state of steam on the mainline just proves?) however (and please correct me if I am wrong) I have never seen a shred of evidence that this monopoly is of WCRC making, that they have used any business practice to push anyone (or stop anyone entering) the market. It is apparent that obviously the operation of steam on the mainline is not commercially attractive or more would be doing it - so we are stuck between a rock and a hard place, until that changes it appears to be WCRC or nothing (especially in the north) - therefore I am not a WCRC lover, however I am a pragmatist who remembers the months earlier this year when we had no mainline steam.

I don't think so! As you must be well aware, there is currently no other TOC doing mainline steam except DBS who will only do certain routes, not very often, and won't do vac brake or double-heading. So there is no alternative to WCRC . Not a healthy situation, but there it is.

Weren't DCR hoping to get a steam passenger safety case at one time but found entry to the market difficult?
Having an interest in main line steam is a bit like following your football club that has been taken over by owners that you disagree with how they run it. Hobson's choice I think it's called.

To be honest I am struggling to remember.
I believe they were self contained and you plugged them into a charger. 60163 didn't need them in the normal course of things as she generates her own power but we had two - one for the rear of the support coach and a spare in the coach. Maybe now they only need to carry the two as spares as the A1 support coach now has a generator on board too.
Maybe someone from A1SLT will put me right if the memory has failed.
