Right I might be being super dumb here, but a dynamo or a generator is a very simple (and cheap) piece of kit to fit to a rotating shaft (eg locomotive or tender wheel)

...why if electronics is required at all times why is provision not being fitted to a main line loco as part of the certification?

I know steam loco design pretty much finished in 1950 but this is 2015 surely we don't rely on batteries?!? You could even put a small (discrete) solar panel on the support coach roof?

Good point. It's worth recognising though that generators started to appear on locomotives over time and, for example, all Bulleid Pacifics had steam generators fitted as standard. How much individual loco owners or owning groups then decided to add to the basic design has been an individual decision and there is, of course, the 'authenticity' factor that kicks in with some of the NRM locomotives on loan. So I guess what you are talking about here is more a matter of forward thinking rather than anything else.

You would still need batteries even if you did have some sort of onboard generator.

Batteries are still used in modern railway kit and not all classes have a back up battery.

Of course - I just assumed that a requirement would be some way of charging that battery...

Should have added that I was quoting from another forum so cannot vouch for the accuracy but nobody has since said that the info is wrong.
