Bummer. Wonder what broke? Obviously nothing too mechanical as it was fit to be dragged.

Most probable. Wonder if 34067 might be fit again? Class 7 replacement.

45699 and 34067 neither exactly have a good track record unassisted over Shap northbound. I wonder if there will be a diesel on the back tomorrow. Is Les Ross fighting fit yet for the non-steam section?

Diesel on the rear got to be the sensible precaution and very probable if recent trains are anything to go by.

When Galatea, Scots Guardsman and Tangmere are on form they are good. But what other stable of locomotives leads us to worry whether 'today' will be a good day or not for whatever is up front?

It's not the kind of situation that oozes confidence is it? And that is without thinking of how Northern Trains/NR feels about one of its trains being cancelled because SG was stuck on the line.

Hope there is enough confidence to entrust Galatea to go solo. No doubt a 47 can be warmed up ready to wizz up the main line if Galatea was to expire, keeping any network delays to a minimum.

I doubt much, if anything, will go out without a diesel in October and into November.

It's my biggest concern about 35018 when it returns, hopefully before too long. I've had a soft spot for this engine since visitng Barry in 1974, when it was the most conveniently-situated Merchant Navy for a picture. I was delighted when it was rescued in 1980 (ish) and pleased when it headed off to Carnforth for final restoration a couple of years back, but my concern is that, after the very high standards which we take for granted with Clan Line, 35018 might prove a disapponitment. I would never say such a thing about such other likely main line returnees/débutants as 7029, 46100, 45212 and 60103 and feel sad to be saying it about an engine I am so looking forward to seeing in action. Still, who knows? We might be in for a pleasant surprise and although I've not travelled behing 45699 or 46115, the runs I've had with 34067 and 44932 were first rate.

Unfortunately competent fitters are not simply waiting to be hired and each additional loco in the fleet creates a commensurate extra workload. Unless fleet expansion is matched by extra resources the task gets ever more difficult to manage for ppm let alone breakdowns.

I read an interview that Sting gave some time back where he reckoned that a lot of people just think he's a "pretentious tosser".....................................................I think they're right! :Joyful:

I feel the same about 35018 because living up to Clan Lines standards is a challenge all on its own.

Living up to Clan Line standards is a bit trying to match Bobby Moore.

While it is undoubtedly a tall order, the financial means and facilities available to the owners of 35018 ought to offer some advantage in trying to emulate the largely volunteer based MNLPS.
