A cracking performance from the 5XP in that case.

The observations of people at the scene will not lie but neither will the laws of physics as applied to the tractive effort available and the load.

The point is that it looks as though on this occasion the crew struck the right balance given what they had to work work so well done to all for providing a good on-train and line-side spectacle.

The diesel on the rear for assisting purposes is an utterly sensible precaution but if it merely adds to the trailing load surely the problem it is intended to mitigate is worsened? A heroic performance from 45699 and crew in the circumstances though.

Fantastic. Probably the best yet from Galatea. I should have been on it as I still need 699 for haulage. Any on the train who can supply details of performance?

Agreed Al. I somehow think the diesel must have pushed quite hard at some stage going up Shap. Or from the from clip we now have a quite astonishing power output from a class 5XP/ 6P on the equivalent of 15 or more coaches!

Similar thing happened a few weeks back when 5231 seemed to have to cope with the dead weight of two 47s as well as the 12 coaches over the long drag, which it did in spectacular fashion by the way.

What a performance! I know it's sacrilege to say this, but I'd rather see Galatea performing like this with a bit of support at the back than labouring without......

I do wonder if Gordon Hodson perhaps asked the 47s driver to let him take the last few yards over the summit after a hefty shove !

Which might account for the slip as seen in your video, but if it were Gordon driving he wouldn't need a hefty shove just some gentle assistance, ie diesel on notch one.

Fair play to WCR, they seem to have exorcised Galetea's demons in some style, and/or bought some decent coal.

I agree. On the Cumbrian Coast/Ais Gill circular as part of The Lakes Express, Galatea was fine. On her own over Ais Gill with 11, she did what you would expect from a Jub, that is obviously less than with a Class 7 or 8. But it remains my view that 10/11 is the max for the loco especially if asked to climb a hill or two.

It's just a pity the demons had had to be previously exorcised in the public gaze with paying punters on board.
