Its good to see the tank ramp wagon being put to good use unloading the Ferrets from the tank wagon. The first photo is mine, the rest are copyright of Dave Gibson Photography who has give me permission to post on here

    Sunday 1st Nov:

A small but productive works party out and about down at Cherry Eye today felling around 16-ish trees (I'm sure Neil will correct me), burning all the brash and tidying up. Certainly looks better already!

    Well done chaps!!

Yes - about 16 trees, some bigger than others but probably close to 5 tons of wood. And the same still to come next time we are there.

The biggest problem is getting it home to the wood burners - we were working as far away from a road as possible, which means we need to go down with a flatbed and loco to bring it back.

Could do with having more numbers too! If anyone is interested in joining such a work party you're more than welcome to join us. Just get in touch :)

For those to whom I've been chubbing on for the last couple of weeks, and the (lucky?) few who haven't had their ears bent yet, this is the book on the Trent and Mersey Canal (including the Caldon Canal down to Froghall) I've been banging on about, published by Lightmoor Press.

While I'm on the subject of books, they also published a book about Coal Mines around Chell - is it any good?

The tree work continues. On a dull, damp, remembrance Sunday we set about more lineside clearance work. There is still more to do (indeed it would be possible to spend a lifetime) but it is looking better already.

Back to more traditional PWay work today, eliminating undulations in the track that had made it unpleasant for the drivers and firemen.

Waved to your pway team today when they passed us working near Leekbrook jct and Cheddleton with the flail?. My colleague and I were doing some flow monitoring in the river. Cheddleton station clearance and fencing looks really smart! .

Ah - saw you paddling down there as we returned at lunchtime. We were on our self-propelled Hi-Ab wagon, some of us at been jacking and packing a dip in the track before the tunnel, whislt the wagon carried on up the Cauldon branch to drop some sleepers off for a team of apprentices who are using the railway as part of their training.

Ah, my colleague and I were trying to work out what the contraption was! River was noticeably colder yesterday than the last few times I have been down! I'll try and pop in and say hello next time I'm working in leek- usually once a month. Had a nice chat with some of the shed staff last year about the tkh. Chris

A bit different than last week, 3 gangs of 3 working down the line. One checking the line after the high winds last night. one working on a farmers crossing and one on a line walk. The heavens opened about 12-00 and 9 men tested their waterproofs, unfortunately they did not display the waterproof qualities very well. No shelter, being on an open Hi ab did not help much, result 9 sodden pway men. Oh the joys of the iron road

Not a bad choice in my book, in fact a good choice! I've ridden behind 5643 and 6619 from this class and they were beasts - looking forward to copping this engine soon.
