    He seems to only like one of each engine. So maybe he wont buy another? Or maybe a Standard 5 for the 75mph bonus. Good news for the engine though! Crewe really is going to be one very busy works with all of Hoskins engines!

    Most of the other types in the collection are somewhat rarer though. Another class 5 should be more straightforward to acquire.
    Might depend on future business model if/when a railtour business and/or TOC becomes incorporated.
    The RM report also implies some borrowed components have to be relinquished from the loco before it leaves 10A.

    45379 was from the Avon Valley then went to the MHR. The Avon valley were extrememly happy to have it back there the other year in steam.

    It was news to me and I have been watching to see if there has been any news on the sale of this engine (If you look to the left of my post, you will see an indication that I do have rather a soft spot for 45231. The photo was taken at St Leonard's Warrior Square in July 2005)

    Mr Hosking clearly isn't supersititious for, if you count both his personal acquisitions and the Royal Scot Trust engines, 45231 takes the tally up to 13. I did wonder whether a humble black five would qualify as an "Icon of steam" and also all his other engines which are either main line-registered or destined to be so are/will be passed for 75mph. Whatever, it's good news.

    Nope! Like 4270 and 6960, it will earn its keep on heritage lines (I suspect you made this comment tongue in cheek - at least, I hope so!)
    More to the point, the black five was a very successful design. Anyway, things have moved on since the 1960s - a number of locos from classes which were much less successful than the black five and/or largely overlooked by the enthusiasts of that period have enjoyed their moments of stardom in preservation. In fact, 4270, which I mentioned above, is a case in point. Hardly an "icon of steam" during its years of slogging up the South Wales valleys with coal trains. but it certainly gained quite a following when it visited the Mid Hants for the autumn gala last year.

    I think you'll find that 4270 was, very much, a main line loco, rather than a South Wales valleys loco, being shedded at Cardiff Canton for most of its BR life.

    I'm afraid "icon" status will always go to the headline grabbers and pass the breadwinners by. Even on a narrower test, 4270 won't get a look in - if I (born after the end of steam) think of the coal trains in the Valleys, then it will be the 56xx 0-6-2Ts every time.

    That's in preservation. Hence how you don't see an A4 belting along at 120+MPH any more either.

    Excellent news regarding this loco which has always been a favourite of mine. I was rather worried it might disappear into the Black hole of Carnforth....... :eek:
    I see from the report that she is due to move to either Crewe or Southall for examination by LSL. It seems that a bit of maintenance work is required before she can be used again.
    I hope she becomes a regular down South both on preserved lines and the Main Line. I know that she was well liked when she was a resident at Ropley MPD for a while.
