Pannier 3650

Was looking on the website for the pannier tank 3650 at Didcot

and noticed that when completed, it is planned to be run in blue livery with 'Stevenson Clarke' lettering in red on the side tanks which it wore in industrial service - does anyone have any photos of this, or any other locos, in this service so I could see what it looks like? Sounds like a very interesting idea for a livery, looking forward to seeing it

Surely not - that looks awful!

I know owners are free to paint their locos in which ever way they see fit, but I don't believe that after such a meticulous restoration over many years that painting the loco in that livery is the best way to show the fruits of their labours?

Although I guess it'll keep the rust off all the same...

 

It's different i'll say that....

I won't pass judgement till i see the actual shade of blue, that pic posted just shows the same "grey/grime" colour of every loco in the 60's.

It isn't a first though, 7754 has worn NCB green in preservation briefly, and one or two of the Ex Underground Panniers returned to LT Maroon.

Anyone know anything more about what exactly 3650 did in industrial use ?, cant find many details on that site other than "colliery use".

 

Have to admit the grime on the loco isn't complimentary. Personally, whatever it turns out like, I think it'll make an interesting addition - plenty of Pannier tanks there in GWR/BR colours and it's industrial use was an important part of it's service life, plus it's always nice to see something different

So what could we get there then... a jinty maybe? J94, this pannier... What else is there? Could certainly be interesting/different!

 

Sticking to locos that are operational, Taff Vale 85, exPTR GWR 813, a Terrier, SECR P Class, LSWR B, and also another pannier- our 7714. To name but a few..........

 

I have had a mail from a friend of mine that works in the "Black Cupboard Gang" and 3650's boiler successfully passed the insurance hydraulic test on Wednesday 22nd August at Didcot. They will be shunting the engine and boiler into the lifting shop on Saturday so that the steam test can take place in soon. =D> =D> \/

I am also told that the engine will carry the livery mentioned above (the Stevenson Clarke Ltd. blue with red lettering) for the running in period. Once the engine is fully commissioned it will be repainted into the 1930's GWR green with the roundel.

Congratulations to the group who have been working on the engine for some time now; let's hope we see the engine running at Didcot (and maybe further abroad) in the not too distant future. =D> =D> =D> =D>

(Note: the team working on 3650 got the name "Black Cupboard Gang" after they liberated some of the formans cupboards from Swindon works in the 1980's and painted them black :lol: )

 

Cheers for that Bryan, I really like the GWR green livery with the roundel so will be good to see that. I did think the Stephenson livery was interesting and showed an important part of it's service life, but would look a bit off coupled to an autocoach on the branch demo line!

 

What Pannier was painted in the fictional livery for filming of the Railway Children? That was even more authentic livery. I would like to see 3650 in Stevenerson Livery if just to see a pannier in a different livery.

 

I believe it was 5775.

Aha! Well, if the cold makes this awful smell go away, I'm not complaining!

(Kingston upon Hell currently has the odour of a horses rear end...)

 

3650 will be a "strong" engine. The cylinders have been bored out to 17 7/8 in, and the wheels are nearly down to 4' 5" (I actually measured one). I'm not a member of the restoration group but have a very good friend who is.
