How much can you shift with an 08?

I can believe it, they are superb bits of kit. Once was doing some shunting at Bewdley D3022 moving 17 coaches in notch one with ease.:) Also had to do a few thunderbird duties, not exactly fast but you get there in the end.

The TE required to move the train would depend on the rolling resistance of the stock, gradient and friction between wheels and rail so the load that could be moved would depend on those. You change the connection on the Traction Motors between series and parallel depending on the TE required.

The 47.5 Ton Class 10 ( GEC equilivant of the 08s) in Series has a tractive effort of over 50,000 lb at 1 mph developed from the 350 hp ER6 Lister Blackstone engine, after 20hp is allowed for auxiliaries. TE falls rapidly with speed.

In Parallel you will get over 40,000 lb TE at 1 mph.

So as long as the load you are hauling allows you to get enough speed up to reduce the TE down to the continually rated effort which is around 6 to 8 mph you can pull as much as you can for as long as you like and your speed will balance against the TE the train requires at full power.

Ours can pull 5 coaches plus a 73 and 37 up a 1 in 80 at a steady 10 mph on 3/4 power and barely breaks into a sweat doing it.

The Class 10 gives me a lot of satisfaction to maintain and drive and the general public seem to like them as well perhaps because they are and look very old, the rods and lots of shiny brass work in the cab.

Not on all of them. On our 08 the series/parallel changes over automatically when (IIRC) notch 4 is selected, the driver has no control over this.
