But the 9F's 521rpm would have achieved going over Stoke summit!

Well I've seen a few about over the last few weeks. I can't remember the locations, but Doncaster and Warrington Arpley come to mind.

Those you have seen are ploughs; the plows are in America. (Sarcasm explained is sarcasm lost).

You have to be very careful with the sarcasm like that, though (particularly on the internet). Not everyone is careful with spelling (or aware of the differences), and it can quickly become "fact" in the echo chamber that is an internet forum.

Interesting to see the plough pictures though!

Re axle counters, the network change for moor street to Warwick specifically mentioned that 9fs would be banned due to method of train detection being used.

None what so ever! Just the poster being a smart Alec over somebody else using the American spelling of plough.

Thank you Sawdust. It took a long time for my joke to sink in. Actually, as often in these cases, I suspect that the original poster didn't choose to use American spelling but that the damned computer is set to autocorrect to it.

Come now fish, a sensible consideration of a reasonable question is asking too much, this old chestnut has run (again) for three pages already, the only thing that surprises is that no starry eyed optimist has suggested converting one to a 2-8-2 yet...

Maybe so but why? As per my earlier post I can only assume nobody has tested it or is prepared to sign it off, rather than there being an actual risk of failure.

Out of curiosity axle counters are essentially German technology, and there are a lot of 2-10-0 locos still on the main line in Germany - do theirs not have flangeless wheels?

Somewhere in the depths of time I remember reading an I Mech E Railway Division paper on the dynamics of check rail interfaces. There was a section on the raised check rail (+6mm?) but nothing specifically about flangeless wheels. The dynamic load of a flangeless wheel hitting a 6mm step at 60mph would impart a significant chain of events in the suspension. To anybody who has been in a loco when you pass over a penny on the railhead you could image the impact of 4 times that height.
