There is already a 'spare' No 1 boiler at Tyseley from 2873 (chassis at SDR) which, IIRC, was intended for the aborted Star project.
As the Torbay & Dartmouth still appear to be short of a 'large' loco (hence the hire of the S160) I wonder why they've never gone after one of the, several, 28xx/38xx that have been offered for sale in recent years.

I think that I've stated previously that this loco is in excellent condition, as it had a heavy general repair at Stafford Road in 1964 & then only ran for 6 months prior to withdrawal.
There is a story that the Severn Valley Railway inspected all of the 2-8-o locos in Barry & subsequently bought 2857 because whoever wrote the reports wrote their sevens similar to nines, and they bought the wrong loco (complete with cracked cylinder block).
The owning group are restoring 5532 first, although the amount of money that will have been spent on it would have easily seen 2859 running by now.
The prairie will be a more suitable loco for our line, added to the fact that we have subsequently got a 2884 class loco.

Motion got sold to 6880 didnt it?

Yes it was around £25,000 that they were talking about in June. Unless they have changed their minds?

I have always thought its a shame all the GWR engines at Llangollen couldnt come together under one charity. You would have a grange, hall, 3802 all able to swap boilers with the 4th from 2859 wouldnt you? Im thinking they are all the same type? Then you could have 7822, 5199, 5532, 7754. Get as many monthly donors as possible into the group and you could in theory have a superb group having 3 of the locos in service with 4 under overhaul. The costs of having just one newsletter, one membership would mean you could save a lot of money that all the groups must currently spend on admin etc. For people who are currently spending money on being part of all the groups that could be re directed into money in donations. And the groups that are currently shareholders such as 5199 and 5532 they would gain from the added gift aid.

Better yet, why doesn't every loco owner give their loco to the government. Overhauls could be funded from taxation. No one would have to worry about gift aid or admin. We could even call it something outrageous like British railways.

Just because a loco is owned by a society, held in trust or by a dedicated fund or even a charity doesn't mean it is a public asset. Ownership in many cases is complex and often reflect private owners financial arrangements.

There are some locos that don't need fundraisers and newsletters with all the associated cost that new builds do.
