Can anyone update me on the current position of this loco? According to the GWRS it's "off-site, undergoing 10 year overhaul".

I have always had a special affection for this particular locomotive. I lived a bicycle ride away from Hayes' Scrapyard when it was in use there, in my 'teens and would often be found around the site and even had a number of footplate rides (ah! the days before H&S became such a big issue)!

I also remember that, after Hayes switched to using an Austerity loco and 9642 was sitting idly by, I presumed it was next in the scrap queue, so I wrote to Hayes, asking if I could buy the safety valve bonnet! I never did receive a reply - I can only presume that, by this time the South Wales Pannier group already had an interest....

I knew there'd be a thread for this loco somewhere! I notice the original pleas didn't get much of a response, so not expecting much, but any news? It seems criminal that the GWSR doesn't have one of these!

It is listed on the UK Preservation Railway Stocklist, as at Moveright International in the West Midlands and been under restoration.

    Hello,
Mr Goodman of Moveright Int is overhauling the Pannier and a 4F at present.
Add to this several LMS coaches (3 I think) and a couple of GWR coaches and several wagons,
Plus running a transport Co, he is a some juggler.
I at times find it difficult enough to deal with one thing at a time....and that says a lot about me.

Thanks for the replies, basically then, under overhaul, but no one really knows much about its progress. :) Yes Mr Goodman has got lots (not!?) on the go. I don't think he's restoring all of them at once though, certainly the GWR coaches and wagons aren't having a lot done to them, nor are at least one of the possible LMS coaches he might have.

The boiler from 9642 is currently with LMS at Loughborough. The gcr newsletter last week reported that 100 new stays had been fitted.

I haven't looked at this thread in ages! So, thanks for all the replies. Yes 9642 did last run on the GWSR, some years ago, before it was moved "off-site" for overhaul, by Andrew Goodman. Unfortunately (and I hope I'm stepping on anyone's toes here), the GWSR and Mr Goodman are not on very good terms these days, so I doubt it will be coming back! And, yes, they really should have a pannier........

When the people making adverse comments regarding Andrew Goodman on this forum have achieved as much in railway preservation as he has ,they might then be qualified to make such comments. Until they achieve this they should pack in the bitching.
Aren't we all in preservation with identical aims ?

I certainly don't wish to make light of all the good stuff Mr Goodman has done in the preservation world, as there certainly has been a lot. Personally I'm just not convinced that it'll work out at Sharpness, nothing to do with the relative merits or otherwise of Mr Goodman, but just the current landscape and climate for such things - the time for new heritage railways have passed, although happy to be proved wrong. I know people said that in the '80s about GWSR, but they were for different reasons. As far as I can tell, the two biggest things that have changed since then has been the price and availability of things like spares and services, and getting enough volunteers - established lines struggle enough already.

How does that work ?, thought it was still open as NR freight only branch.

Then again imagine their "bridge the gap" fund to connect to the Dean Forest Railway

I think that's what it's called this time...? it's not the beaver line this time anyway. :(

I know a railway, already tidier than the vast majority, where a board member has spearheaded a campaign to clear up redundant scrap and improve the look of the extremities of the place. Firstly this helps the bank account and secondly reassures the planning officer that the people concerned may be trusted. Who knows when the goodwill of the former will be needed.

This is helped considerably by the fact that one organisation owns every last square metre of land and each fishplate bolt. Somehow I doubt whether unity of ownership will be a feature of the Vale of Berkeley scheme. More squabbles a la WSRA?
