GAV106: I must have missed the fact that 82045's barrel has been rolled. I must study my members' newsletter more carefully!

Update: Actually the October newsletter says an " up-front payment " has been made to Barnshaws, so maybe they are rolling it right now, as we write!

Can't help but wonder whether the 44901 team might not do better going for a complete new build boiler rather than getting a secondhand boiler of relatively unknown condition from Turkey?

That is ultimately sensible but an awful lot of loot up front! Saying that the flnaging blocks for the throatplate and backhead could have a potential to raise funds as there are plenty of Black 5s about that at some point are going to require major boiler and firebox renewals.

The SVR boilershop is about to embark on two somewhat smaller, but traditionally built fireboxes, 82045 and the one for the Worth Valley Ivatt tank. They now have the kit to turn out firebox stays in quantity.
There is clearly collaboration with the South Devon Railway engineering workshops, I wonder if they are building the outer steel firebox and Bridgnorth the inner copper box?

Please remember that what they intend to bring back from Turkey is not just the boiler. Its all the spares as well. So im sure what they are aquiring will be more than the value of just the boiler. Plus they have already worked on one steel inner firebox so they are happy to work on another.

Apologies if I have the Stick by the wrong end./ haven't kept up at the back but Surely from a Heritage Line perspective an 8f is just as useful as a black 5, why cannibalise an 8F to get another Black 5 working ?
Are'nt there at least 2 other black 5's in the process of restoration ? Plus a Project to build a Caprotti Chassis ? ...

For some lines an 8f would be more useful, arguably, so the point you make has some merit. Guess the group want a bit of variety in their fleet though. Ideally both would be restored of course, along with the other 3 ex Barry Stanier 5s yet to run.

Are they buying a whole other 8f? Or just a selection of parts?

Several black 5s have already had new backheads - 45428, 44767 and 45231 come to mind - so the flanging block for that already exists. Although it has to be said that the pressings produced from it were rumoured to have taken a great deal of work to make them fit.

If I remember correctly; Bridgnorth made a flanging block for a new backhead for 45110 a while back.

Not aware of the Caprotti project - have you any details/links?
A 5 might be kinder to the track than an 8 from hammerblow?

    Thanks for that.

It would appear that the project will depend on the loan of a boiler and tender from another 5 to present a complete loco

Possibly, although I think the 44901 group are intending to bring back a tender from Turkey for the 5, whether there is another spare tender and a spare boiler for the Caprotti is anyone's guess!

But that one's complete and I think someone from the UK has a claim over it as he paid for it just before the first Gulf War broke out!

Given the similarity and presumed ( a pretty big presumption perhaps) commonality between Black 5, 8f that's a got be at least a Dozen locos. and the inevitability that parts of boilers ( and other bits) will need to be repaired/replaced... is there like a Stanier owners group (like the BRSLOG) which might club together to contribute to produce 'mutual benefit' tooling ... ?
