If this is correct then they are off D326 (40126). From recollection, that loco didn't have the best of luck being linked to brake failures, accidents and of course the 1963 incident!

Is that for certain? I seem to remember that when 40126 was withdrawn, it was scrapped immediately and completely to avoid any trade in 'souvenirs'.

It's definitely what I've been told, by several different people! Whether that means it's true or not is another matter though...

Havent post on the thread for a while so thought I'd share this photo taken by our project manager.

We have a 3 page spread in the latest Steam Railway magazine and as you can see the picture our copy is well read. ... oh and the frames are coming along brilliantly. On Wednesday we have 12 members of the team working on the beast I think we have the most people working on a single project on the line now.

No kidding. Can someone educate me here. Is that REALLY all smokebox at the front end? How come the MN boiler has such a large smokebox compared to other similar sized locos?

It's a bit foreshortened by the camera angle which accentuates the size of the smokebox in the foreground, but yes, the smokeboxes are huge. I remember seeing Sir Archie with the boiler ready to lift and the smokebox missing, and was struck by the proportions - it's as if you have a huge firebox, a long smokebox and a very stubby boiler barrel in between. When all the cladding and smoke deflectors are on, that isn't quite so obvious; on an original, everything is cloaked in the cladding and the relative relationship between firebox, barrel and smokebox is largely hidden.

There's a side-on elevation here to show the proportions - the smokebox is clearly shorter than the barrel, but not massively so.
