47 was meant to be on the rear from March, but track circuit failure meant it couldn't run round, hence why it had chase it to Peterborough and be attached there. The line between Ely and Peterborough sees a fair amount of traffic, and has some quite long sections as well.

I am sure York Festive Market would have been the big attraction for many booking, however, as long as you got a pic or video, all is good eh....

I wasn't having a go at the train operator but the pathetic goons who now run what was our national rail system. Overrunning engineering works shouldn't happen but no one cares and no doubt the monkeys at NW Rail will still get their bonuses. Sorry rant over.

Fair enough but overrunning engineering works is not a new phenomenon.

Are you thinking of the right York? This one is the popular one, the one in Yorkshire. The one that's got to be one of the most popular tourist cities in the country, and that's for reasons other then the NRM believe it or not.

Given that the reason to leave the 47 at March was it's inability to shunt onto the rear then why on earth make the Duchess hang about at Peterborough. Surely the sensible option would have been to let the Duchess go forward to York alone without further delay & inconvenience to all on board? Not only would the York visiting time be extended but those travelling for steam would have what they paid for? There are clearly two footplate WCR crews available so why couldn't the 47 have followed to York, or better still stayed at March until the return this evening?

Whether Network Rail or WCR decided on what seems the worst possible course of action I don't know. Either way they need a very large dose of common sense.

Or perhaps with two loco assistance they felt they would gain more time than attaching lost. There is quite a big slope after Peterborough.

Perhaps you are right. A light Class 47 might not make it to Stoke summit on it's own.

RTT doesn't seem to pick up where the train is stationary, but the huge loss of time along ECML perplexes me. Yes, it was out of its path, but things don't seem to have gone very smoothly.

I thought it was normal to route delayed trains onto the slow/into loops to let on-time services overtake. Always has been annoying when you are on the delayed one but at least the other train's pax don't get delayed.

Also just a random thought; as there were delays south of Peterborough earlier for ECML services they may have got extra priority from the controllers to get back on time over the WCRC one-off service.

Yet another nail in the coffin of an awful year for steam. I have put my sat nav away now until February

But on the positive side this time it seems to be nothing down to failure of the loco or any other tour related factor but all NR issues. Can WCRC or the tour promoter claim compensation from NR for these delays?

Tours generally having bad luck this year, I was told the all diesel tour from Taunton to Newcastle on the 5th had a loco fail in the lay over in Newcastle delaying the return departure considerably.
