Hi Guys

I was wondering if a drawing exists of the 4-8-4 tank loco, I have the Robert Gratton book but can only find the L&M loco, I am interested in how much bigger these where, thanks in advance.

Apart from a general arrangement drawing in a book has anyone ever seen a set of manufacturers drawings for any narrow gauge locomotive? I certainly never have, not even a photo of any, I mean the sort of drawing that you could build a replica loco from.

According to Robert Gratton's book "The Leek & Manifold Light Railway" one of ER Calthrop's "B class" 4-8-4Ts built by Kitson for the Barsi Railway still survives! It is basically a stretched version of the classic Leek & Manifold 2-6-4Ts and from the works photograph is visually very similar (including the distinctive cab design and headlight).

The surving loco is No.11 (Kitson 4509/1907) "Lord Airdale" (but now carries the plates "Sir Alec") and is supposed to be preserved in front of the Indian Railways headquarters (zonal Headquarters office of South Central Railway, called Rail Nilayam) at Secunderbad. (Lord Airdale was the Chairman of Kitson).

I woundered if anyone has come across a photograph of it?

EDIT: Just found this on Google maps - there appears to be a green plinthed loco beside the main road at the end of the footbridge.

To whomever want the 4-8-4's drawings. I don't have them either. That is a very unique loco in a sense that
for a narrow gauge, it'll be hard to turn unless the terrain and rail property (right of way) is of no importance where it works.

Yes, I bought the Graton's book via Amazon.com. It's very extensive writes with the drawings of the L&M 2-6-4T loco
and rolling stocks. The book is thick and attractive inside and out (a bit pricy however worth it). And yes, I saw
the holes on all of he loco's wheels in the drawings. The 4-8-4 version would be impossible for the track where
I run my 2-6-4T. This leads me to .... Now, for even the smaller wheel arrangement of my L&M, I got a problem
on a track designed for (well, not designed but the real estate space) narrow gauge operations. I'm just working
on putting a sideway swing springing on the front truck of Pearse's 16mm/ft model version. The flat spring
on the pony (pilot truck in USA term) would put a tension against the side of the rail upon a curve track to keep the
truck on rails. At my buddy's track, the pilot truck kept on climbing over the rail as is. The rear bogie on the
other hand has 2 side coil springs so no problem going backwards. Both trucks have vertical springing against
the chassis roof to give weight on the trucks.

The Pearse's model only has drilled hole with round bearings on the drivers so it doesn't give when it hits a twig
or even some grits on the track. The entire loco would lean and tip off the rail when that happens.

So, someday, I would spring and equalize (levers and fulcrums) the entire chassis as shown
in the book (hard to see if and how the 1st driver axle is tied to the pilot truck however*)
along with turning a bigger (more true to 16mm scale) set of drivers and truck wheels with the holes on their plates
and much prototypical filet between the tire (tyre in UK) and the flange and more generous flange tip radius.
The original wheels are great for pie cutter flanges to pick on the turnout (switch) points as my old Roundhouse
locos are.

*I'll just use the standard way of long lever arm connecting the front driver axle leaf springs to the top of
the pilot truck frame separator.

For those interested in 16mm/ft L&M 2-6-4T, Roundhouse Engineering still make it available but not Pearse's.
