RTC have "pencilled in" 35018 on various tours for over a year now, in much the same way as they have offered Royal Scot on almost every Great Britain tour. However, none of the Carnforth watchers have spotted any sign of her in steam, so I wouldn't assume anything. Personally, I'd expect that 34016 and/or 73096 are getting more attention than 35018, but I doubt anyting will be known for sure until one of them appears in the loops at Carnforth waiting for the road to Hellifield.

73096 at Carnforth? Still at Southall and still owned by J.B.

People should know by now that getting gen out of WCRC is on a par with booking Jesus to speak at your Birthday Party, I'm sure the need for a 75MPH class 5 and a gauge friendly Bulleid in user friendly rebuilt form will see them out before too long.

I think 35018 will not be ready for a while as i heard they were getting trouble fixing it but i think they should give more information about when it will be finished because it sais it will be on the mailine in steam railway!!!:Rage:

Hmm, some of us are, shall we say, from bitter experience more than a little cynical about the offerings from some of the railway publications, trying to outdo each other with 'scoops'.

Has anybody got any updates on 35018's restoration as she has been on the cards for the last few years in returning to the mainline but is still being restored.

    There's already a thread for 35018 here.

As I'm sure you are aware, West Coast do not comment on their restorations at Carnforth, so there won't be any news of her until she appears on test either outside the sheds or on the mainline.

That is a BOB/WC boiler, some give away signs even from that distance.

To illustrate where the restoration started, here's British India Line at Ropley in 1980, recently arrived from Barry. Scan-140624-0003 (2).jpg

No idea if it's from 34073 (anyway they were swapped around all the time during BR days)!

However there are a number of ways to tell the difference between a BoB/WC and a MN boiler the easy ones are the number of washout plugs on the firebox is 5no for a BoB/WC & 6no for a MN.

The other easy one to see in this sort of photo is if there is a traditional foundation ring it's a MN boiler where as if it's a rounded fabrication that's been welded in lieu of a foundation ring it's a BoB/WC.

The bob/WC is also shorter with a smaller firebox but thats harder to tell.

I am sure there are other obvious differences; which others will add?

Surely it was only the first 15 MN boilers that had foundation rings?

15 wouldn't make a huge amount of sense, the MNs are generally reckoned to come in three batches of 10. The first 10 boilers had the taper on the front ring. Subsequent batches (and a few spares) had the taper on the back ring for weight reasons, allowing the frames to be be left with fewer holes.

I've always understood that batches 2 and 3 had identical boilers. This picture shows 35028 having a boiler with a conventional foundation ring. There's no reason she couldn't have a boiler from a Batch 2 MN, but I'd guess that for a last batch of 10 it wouldn't be worth creating yet another variation for the boiler shops to deal with.
