Thank goodness for some sanity - hope she's back in steam shortly. (BTW there's a bolt missing out of the nearest fishplate ;) )

Those two pictures sum up why the 8F didn't look good in red and why her more accurate black suits her.

Of course I do take the point that she'd rarely look like this...

Absolutely correct. In my early BTP career, if I was working nights at Heysham, I would be sent to Lancaster to observe the safe passage of the RT (when it ran along the WCML). 'Grove' passed without incident' was the entry in my police notebook and always countersigned by the Sergeant!

I used to listen to my transistor radio at night, mail trains between Crewe and Warrington would call in to, I assume, the police HQ, one call sign I remember being 'Quebec' the other having faded into oblivion....

And if I recall correctly, the Royal Train running as empty stock with a headlamp over each buffer (Class A) was given as 'Deepdene'.

Au contraire mon brave, it illustrates that the LMS missed a trick by not painting all of their locos in crimson lake. ;)

You just can'thelp yourself, can you?!!

Of course, you could say that the Southern missed a trick by not building the pacifics as they were when rebuilt!

    Your move, mon ami!

I can only assume that you either missed the winking smiley and the end of my message or you are unaware of the purpose of same but never mind, I'll explain. It means my post was not meant to be taken seriously.

Likewise, Spamcan (I don't use smileys, but the exclamation marks were a clue!).

It would have been a shame if Mr Bulleid had not built his pacifics as he did. We would have missed out on hours and hours of entertainment as the anti- and pro-rebuilding lobbies battled it out!

I doubt the shareholders of the Southern Railway would agree with you. Although perhaps it didn't make much difference in the end with the way it worked out between war and nationalisation.

Purely on an aesthetically basis, why should a Jubilee look good in LMS Red and a Black 5 or an 8F not?

Mind you its interesting, maybe depressing, just how much what looks good in the public eye is driven by what they are used to. Do you remember the Ford Sierra criticism when that was new?

I'd say there's some truth in that that even WITHOUT the smiley. Weren't a lot of NCC locos painted red when their nearest equivalents on the LMS were black?

A Black 5 and 8F would look good in red and it's a pity the LMS didn't adopt it for all their mainline engines but the fact remains they didn't. I had three Sierras as company cars and they didn't handle well but the futuristic design did catch on in the end.

Firstly you miss my point, and secondly you're wrong, it would have been easier NOT to through pipe the unfitted wagons and certainly no more difficult to paint the majority in accurate bauxite livery. As for your photograph, I haven't scrolled back to check but why would I use a photograph on the internet to judge accuracy, when they are so often digitally manipulated? And what makes you think accuracy only matters if it shows up in a photograph anyway?
For what it's worth I know the majority are vacuum fitted as I've been underneath most of them. I also know the signals at Swithland are "wrong" because I personally helped to install them. These are compromises I can live with, but as I said you missed my point.

We used to work on the Whitehaven - Huddersfield TPO between Barrow and Preston (and return). Call-sign one way was 'Vienna' and the other direction was 'Baghdad.' Can't remember which was up and down though! IIRC, the other name you were looking for Ralph was 'Paris.'

With respect I think the point missing is on your part, I think the reason for acquiring the minerals was to portray a representation of the Annesley- Woodford Windcutters which John Brooks and his team have done. I know the wagons are piped or vacuum braked but I can understand the decision not to paint them in the far less common Bauxite livery. It's all a matter of compromise, the running of loose coupled freights required a lot of skill on the part of the train crew, a skill which I think is now largely lost.

Finally I can assure you that apart from the usual processing of the raw file to get a half decent image I do not digitally modify any of my images.

Es tut mir leid but I wasn't aware that a question mark followed by two exclamation marks equalled a smiley. You must publish a list of your alternative "emoticons" for us all to learn. Please be sure to use the correct coloured font though. :)

Agreed. I'm sure that if the LMS had adopted apple green from day 1, people would have how odd their locos looked if they'd been painted maroon in the BR livery trials.

That's the one... This was obviously after the great train robbery and was therefore extra security that someone on the train was in a position to contact the police if needed. I never knew this officially but from what was said for, example when they made an unexpected reduction in speed, I put two and two together.

Way of the thread topic I know, but all TPO's that could carry 'high value mail' were manned by two BTP officers who used a multi-channel VHF police radio built into one corner of the radio vehicle. We called in at pre-determined points along the way, all station stops and any unscheduled stops. For the latter, police control rooms would call railway control and ask for confirmation that the stop was not untoward. I really enjoyed working the TPO's up north and later between Southampton and Waterloo. Police escorts were discontinued in November 1973, by which time I'd become quite skilled at letter sorting and mailbag sealing!
