Yes, we've actually achieved TWO different topics simultaneously, neither having anything to do with the title!

Why couldn't a BR totem be added to a black loco over the painted out GWR letters ?

Turning the argument the other way round...
Where is the BR totem on this one ?, was their ever one ?

It was a valve for the Weir pump. When condensing the the water in the tanks would get hot making conventional injectors inoperative. The presence of these pumps caused them to be used as fire pumps during the London Blitz I believe.

Well folks, here's an opportunity. Not a big class and London based so reasonably well photographed. Lets see how many photos of 9709 we can come up with and see what liveries she was carrying through the 1950s...

If that's supposed to spark a discussion on incorrect liveries sorry but it's already been done to death.

But that is the wrong shade of red! Did they not look at the colour charts in Derby before choosing her dress!

I am just trying to clear out my mind having idly started thinking about why that young lady should be labelled not to be loose or hump shunted....

hump shunting --- no concentrate man !

That shot of the 97XX reminds me that back in the day when my local spotting haunt was Walton Old Junction I distinctly remember one 8F on which that the LMS number or at least the shape of it was clearly visible on the cab sheets beneath the BR black paint, not only that but the tender also showed traces of L M S. And I doubt we would have noticed that but for seeing the cabside number. Sadly my notes have gone long since so I've no idea which one.
Since that would have been 1967 or early 68 it is inconceivable that the loco and tender had been paired since nationalisation so do we assume that the paint jobs were genearally no more than the least needed ? Anyone else recall anything similar.

Some locomotives did manage to hang on to the same tender although rare.
