I don't know - a new loco to an original design. What's wrong with that?

Give the L&BR a time machine and yes we would go back and get them, we might even bring a few others back with us as well, the trouble is that the new locos have to comply with current regulations, the first thing to go on the old locos would be the asbestos lagging.

    Regards

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I'm not knocking it. My point is that for various reasons the person or organisation considering a new loco to an original design is unlikely to be the same person or organisation considering, for instance, ELSA.

Surely the solution is to send Elsa to the Kolin Loco works in the Czech Republic and ask them to rebuild her!! ;)

(Actually, they say they also do restoration....)

Surely this depends on your definition of 'preservation'. Some would claim that preserving or reopening an old route described their role in the movement while others see themselves as purely locomotive orientated, although those are two extremes and I would expect most people to be a bit of both. Would the WHR have been rebuilt if the only motive power to be used would be originals that worked on the line or locomotives of the same design? Should all the stations have been built as replicas of the original? Unless someone is lucky and finds the original in some South American jungle then I would be happy to visit the L&B and see replicas of the originals, even replicas that had been 'tweaked' a little.

True. I should have said, "A loco preservationist ...." One of the great things about the narrow gauge railway scene (even more so than the standard gauge counterparts) is its sheer variety and I think that is part of the attraction. Every scheme is different. Different aims, different means, different philosophies. (And different stock and route, obviously.)

    Another new build - possibly.

A company called 'The Southern Narrow Gauge Railway Ltd' are circulating proposals to rebuild the southern section of the L&B and claim to have a new locomotive under construction for this. No idea what, how much has been manufactured so far or if it is as 'pie in the sky' as the rest of their proposals...

Any links for that please Charlie?

The 'Southern Narrow Gauge Railway Ltd' has been in existence since June 2015 and only has one director - a Mr Shaun Robins who appears to be involved in road haulage in Devon (all info from companycheck.co.uk)
I wonder if this gentleman has consulted and come to an agreement with Exmoor Associates and the L&B Trust who between them own a reasonable length of the trackbed...

    More likely a pipedream

Shaun (who I have known in a vague fashion for a few years) has at least been involved in a previous restoration. He is, or was, part of Exmoor Transport, and was intimately involved in the restoration of Gertrude, now on the WHHR, along with Les Driver. I'm sufficiently out of touch with both of them to be unsure about anything involved in The Southern Narrow Gauge Railway Ltd though. Suffice to say I'd not heard of it until now.

No links available - unlike many schemes the proposals are on paper rather than the website/Facebook page many 'schemes' start with.

As John has said Shaun Robins was nominally apprentice to Les Driver when Les overhauled Gertrude.

While it may sound a good idea to have a steam loco ready for the southern end of the line, that is the least of the problems they may face, I don't think anyone has put in any planning permission to rebuild the L&BR south of Blackmoor just yet and has been agreed years ago Exmoor Associates have enough on there plate with what they have and what else is going to be coming on to the market place in the next few years, you can't build a railway without trackbed and that is what they are concentrating on.

If anyone has any money they want to throw at the L&BR then the 762 group would like to hear from you to help get 'LYN' in steam this year.

North Bay replica Sipat 'Georgina' is almost there. Saddle tank is off being painted. Steam trials in a few wedks with launch over Easter weekend.

This is the first new locomotive for the railway for 84 years.
