Who knows Galbertea might even be getting a green makeover as we write!
Or turns out to be both Scots instead.

I am tempted to book. As a matter of fact, I'm even minded to say 'what the hell' and go for it. The route takes in half of Cheshire, and that is what sells it for me. However, I'll still holding fire on other trips I'd like to do between now and March.

I will be on the Tin Bath. I really don't see how much more attractive this trip could be made. Assuming NR is ok with the revised route (as you never can tell), WC is ok with the motive power (as you never can tell) and the ORR is ok with WC (as we will know in due course) things should be fine. So just like any other steam charter then! :):)

Oh, well, you've convinced me on this one! Ticket bought, and I suppose the thing about waiting for the outcome next week is that there is always a risk that there would be a rush on tickets due to the motive power. Time will tell, I guess...

Its a good job you talked me into booking it as 20 seats in Standard went today, with only 15 left. There are around 10 left in First and 54 in Premier, so its already booked-up really well. Let's hope thinks work out for the best.

It was perhaps too much to hope that we would have steam back to Preston as I see UK Steam says the Jubs come off at Bolton. Should still be a good trip but why on earth everyone (I probably mean NR here) doesn't make their minds up I don't know. I know the legal bit about guaranteeing that you are actually taken from A to B but the whole point of these charters for some is that the route you take and which bit has steam is important.

And this is just 24 hours after I checked with the RTC that the trip was running as planned and with no changes before I sorted out accommodation, travel tickets etc. They were kind enough to say that the train would be running with a (First Class) coach less but neglected to say that the route was changing and that steam would come off at Bolton. I presume they didn't know or the King's Lynn staff hadn't yet been told. And there we are wondering why the paying passengers are getting just a little suspicious of everything nowadays.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Oh, dear. The only new bits for my steam map of Britain where I'm concerned as a result of this change is as follows:

    Wigan to Lostock Jc
    Salford Crescent-Ashburys
    Wincobank Station Jc-Aldwarke Jc
    South Kirkby Jc-Calder Bridge Jc

If they've got the timings to do the route as planned, it doesn't seem as though it was too ambitious from that standpoint, but I'm wondering if the strenuous nature of the northern part of the route means that coal supply might be the reason for curtailing the steam mileage. The southern route would actally provide a decent 'Cheshireman' circuit if Copy Pit is avoided.

Will probably bail out at Piccadilly, as I can't say I'm too keen to stay on for diesel haulage, no matter how interesting the track. At least the later start time allows me to get to Preston from York by train, rather than by car, which will gives me the option to bail out. A pint in Manchester might be in order instead! Nevertheless, I shouldn't complain too much if mainline steam goes completely pear-shaped, as at least I'll have done one last trip and ticked-off some 'difficult' junctions in the process...

How cynical. But not necessarily wide of the mark given previous events.

Nowhere to take coal might be a problem although the Jubs still go back to Carnforth under their own power. It may also be the case that it was difficult to programme in another water stop south of Manchester. I just ask myself, why does the RTC promise something it can't deliver (or at least double check with WCRC first)? The alternate route given to avoid Huddersfield is actually easier on the locos so it's not as if NR has made it tricky. But we are only the people paying out the money. Why tell us?

Please note that this still over 14 days away, so the plan could still change ! I guess I should have marked this up as provisional.

Out of interest what might cause the plan to change that is presently unforseen?

Well, they usually route the trip through Man Vic, and its a full day just to do that loop. Man Pic makes it more difficult to do engine changes. I can see the theory- doing the Cheshire loop allowed the train to turn around with steam without causing too much disruption to get back to Preston. However, they could have put a diesel on the back and avoided the problem altogether. At least they tried to get a steam-based workaround.

Fair point, but the RTT times point to the stock coming from Blackburn by diesel with, I guess, the locos on the other end. I presume that the train then goes forward to Bolton where there seems to be a pause, hopefully to detach the diesel, that waits there for the trip to return. Operationally this looks like a neat solution but not as originally planned. But, hey - ho, that's the way it goes.
