Waste my time reading wibble from disgruntled linesiders? No thanks, I waste enough time on this forum without wasting additional time elsewhere. ;)
Genuine question - are you speaking as a disgruntled lineside observer or as a disgruntled passenger?

Are you sure IR didn't sabotage the air pump just to annoy Swiss Toni? :)

Would you have preferred it if IR / ELR kept it all secret so that FS's first runs were only seen by either those incredibly lucky enough to have been there, or those 'in the know'.

I can't understand what all the fuss is about, FS needed a period of running in before it's loaded test run, it was run as a public event and the ELR got a lot of free publicity and made a lot of money, nothing wrong in that. A few teething problems came to light, so what? That's what running in is for, it's happened before to other locos that have not had such a major rebuild as FS.
If all the hot air on here could be harnessed then it could probably run up to Carnforth without using any coal. The only criticism I would suggest is that there should have been a longer period between the proposed load test and it's first mainline run but, having said that, I can fully understand why the NRM would want to get it earning it's keep as soon as possible.

Agreed. And given the relatively short timeframe between the testing / running in period on the ELR and the 23rd Jan, it was always going to be optimistic that the loco' would be fully fit and ready for the CME on that date.
In the big scheme of things, the air brake issue is small fry, given the problems and issues that have blighted Scotsman over the last few years. The criticism that has been levelled at (in particular) the NRM during that time has probably, at least in part, been justified, but to decry and pour scorn on the events of the last couple of weeks seems to me to be hugely unfair to everyone involved in getting the loco to the stage it is now at.
I also think that regardless of how successful something is perceived to be, you are always going to get a minority of moaners, which is probably what we're seeing here. I also think that some of the comments are being deliberately provocative and the said moaners love nothing more than winding people up.
As for Scotsman herself (or himself!) not long to wait now before she is seen in her fully restored glory, no doubt about that. And to quote Henry Royce, 'may the quality remain long after the price has been forgotten'.

So as far as having paid for a ticket is concerned, I'll take that as a no.
As for me - I'm speaking as someone who wished he could have been there, even planned to be there but in the end didn't make it and feels he missed out on a good day. :( The thrash behind 73129 was some small compensation though.

Not like you to pass up the opportunity to cop a Gresley for a humble ED, but each to their own I guess :)

I don't see what the problem is.

This was never billed as the official launch - it was some pre-launch testing that rather than being run in the dead of night, stakeholders (as in the British public who fund the NRM) got a chance to watch.

Once they knew they wouldn't have to take it apart to sort some niggle somewhere, then it can be painted, and no doubt shifted off to either York or Kings Cross for a full publicity launch in whatever livery it ends up turned out in. This way those who could get to the ELR will feel a part of the process as will those who get to see the official launch - net result a bigger pool of potential future donors, ticket buyers and interested kids.

Not the least impressive aspect of this restoration is the evenness of the exhaust beats in both directions of running. Some other locos sound far less even when in excellent condition otherwise.

And I'd have thought that the best official launch, if it could happen, would be when Flying Scotsman leaves King's Cross alongside the 1000 Virgin East Coast service. That's what I'd call publicity.

I suspect if someone suggested that to Branson he'd make it happen if at all possible!

If only, although I fear FS would have to wait until 10:05.............don't want it to "get under the feet" of one of Virgins finest.;)

On a wet bed on the Ely Peterborough line I've seen an A4 do a very good impersonation of a Tilting train, Not a bend in sight on that line either.

Highly likely on the 2018 date, I think, but I also hope that they manage an event like that in 2016. Don't forget that on May 23rd 2011, East Coast introduced a four hour southbound, non stop (except Newcastle) service so there is also a five year 'anniversary'. There are plenty of excuses to do something clever with Richard Branson, I think.
