Did anyone ever do what you should not do when the train is in the station (except in Basingstoke) on the Tramway??

Given the chaos created when they shut the quay every year for events this should be voted a non-starter ASAP. Since it closed DCC have changed the road network; the town would not welcome it more than on odd days. Odd days I doubt would justify cost of track repairs. Much better to have an appeal to fund one or other of the turntable proposals.

  3. I spent a fair amount of time in Weymouth in the 1990s and, from what I saw, there was so much 5H17 out on the streets (especially on a Friday and Saturday night) that a bit more wouldn't have noticed.

As far as the B&Q crossing. Live and in occasional use. There to King Street crossing sleepers look rotted. Some definite dips in the street sections. Not sure about the slipway loop as not walked that for a few months. No run round loop at Quay without spending lots on labour to shift the gangway etc. End points no idea as in secure zone. May well be tarmacced over.

Recollection also legal action would be needed to reopen Quay station if pax are to be allowed to alight.

Perhaps it's best to not be too critical of standards in English education these days; looking through Mr Whittingham's collection of photographs of the Weymouth branch, there's a sign of some antiquity that bears the legend: 'No parking on hatched area Do not Obstruct trains.'

    Hello,
    Walked the tramway today.
Will be a link later to
    YouTube & Flickr.
You can then make up your own minds as to feasibility of re opening.
Two lovely dipped running rails to sort out amongst other issues!

    Why not a community tramway/metro?

For what purpose? Weymouth is hardly Manchester or Sheffield.

From middle of effectively nowhere to a ferry port with no ferries not exactly a revenue earner.

Regrettably I think realistically we have to believe that.

Currently no ferry after Condor bought a vessel too big for the berth and switched to Poole. That service is not going to return unless HM Government or the EU changes policy on funding a new ro/ro berth as locally there is no agency (public or private venture) coming forward with money for the necessary enlargement works. The scheme was proposed before Condor left, there was a will to accommodate the bigger vessel, just an inability to find the necessary £multi-million funding.

There is a proposal that has been getting mentioned for two to three years now for a future high speed link to Cherbourg but recent news reports identified the Council (port owners) have raised doubts publicly during discussion on the 2016 budget for the harbour that it will happen . See Dorset Echo report from 31 Dec 2015.

Although I have no employment connection with any aspect of the trade as a local I would like to see ferries back. The local economy lost a lot when Condor left, we really need a replacement ferry service, but am skeptical it will occur.

NB Edited as now found and linked the remembered news report.

There has been local press chatter recently with people wanting tarmacking over the rails in places for safety. A meeting therefore might fit in with that.

Well it's a stupid idea but such stupidities do damage the heritage railway movement because they make us all look stupid.

From a standpoint of history and heritage, it'd be better if we just left whatever's left in place. Reopening would involve digging the whole road up (I suggest it's one thing having your OAP volunteer P-Way gang digging ballast but having granddad handling pneumatic drills is quite another), replacing the original track and road surface. This would destroy a mildly interesting piece of railway archaeology which is accessible to anyone visiting the town.

Tarmacking areas for safety is unlikely to cover all signs of it.

I do realise that in preservation sometimes we have to replace life-expired kit, but we should only do so when there is benefit in doing so.

This whole business reads as though the driving force here is Network Rail who want to get rid of the line and responsibility for it. That makes absolute sense to my mind as the reasons for the original concept - i.e. freight and passengers for the Channel Islands - have gone. People wanting to use the Condor Ferry (assuming it doesn't destroy the ferry terminal again) will not be interested in train access given the time it takes. I looked up my trip with 41298 down to Weymouth Quay. It took 20 minutes and that was, of course, at walking pace.

I could see a case for closing the whole of the harbour-side road area to through traffic and turning it into a more permanent pedestrian/tourist amenity but, sadly, the idea of any railway/tramway to the quay would be a lost cause, in my view. Probably the cramped space and safety concerns would knock it on the head. On the other hand, a little road train for the tourists might be fun.

Poorest as in lack of money. High % of essential benefits have to be paid out with only partial central government reimbursements. (Former employee observation so informed comment).

Closing Custom Ho Quay to traffic happens a few times a year for events and brings traffic in the town to a stand. An even dafter idea than the trams
